Experience with your AD
Recently I was fortunate enough to get my first Patek (5227J). I found this forum after I got my watch. You all seem very hospitable and I have much to learn here.
My question is this: If your AD is out of town, have they sent you a Patek without payment and a reliance that the check is in the mail? I just spoke to an AD (the store’s owner) twice for a total of 10 minutes and we don’t know each other or have any prior relationship. I told him I would send a check and he sent me my watch the next morning by FedEx. Where I grew up, this kind of thing doesn’t happen but since this is a whole other societal tier I thought I would check in and see if others have had a similar experience. Thanks |

Many times for me, but I am surprised for a first time buyer. You must make a great "first impression."

I don't think this happens to much anymore. The world is full of scammers, seems like more and more are attracted to watches because there is some liquidity.

That’s great! You should ask for a 5711/1a.

Great way to do business from a customers standpoint. Probably not the norm in 2019 but that move would earn my loyalty for sure.

Wow that AD has some balls to send a 20k plus Patek without the check clearing first. What would the AD do if the check bounced for insufficient funds?

I called him a few days later to make sure he got my check. I asked him about the 5711 and why it was so popular. After being on this forum for the last month and a half after my purchase, I can now see the fervor for it. He offered to put me on this list, without requiring another purchase or an implication of another purchase. Based on other forum posts, this would only add to this too-good-to-be-true story.

Okay. I have no idea what you’re referring to, but if you're doubting the OP’s story, for what it’s worth, my AD sent me my first Patek before it was paid for as well. I had the watch on my wrist for almost a week before my check was cashed. It happens. I actually purchased a couple watches from him before we finally met in person. Great AD. Wonderful man. Solid relationship. I wouldn’t even consider buying a Patek from another AD, though I am sure there are other great ADs to work with.

That AD is a keeper. Keep buying from him until one of you kicks the bucket.

For non-hot watches they take my credit card. For Nautilus they demand a cashier's check ; i guess they save 3% fee

I am probably of the check writing vintage; my niece has tried to get me into venmo and other newer forms of payments but I am still a check writer/credit card user. Somehow I think the new forms of payment can be rife with fraud potential but the older forms have been cracked by criminals in numerous ways that no one should use them anymore.

Good ad. I’ve had watches sent to me by my AD many times and I’ve paid later. However I’ve known my AD 25 years and have a good relationship. For a first time
Buyer it’s surprising they did this so good for you and keep that relationship going. |

I was stunned as well. I thought this might be done given the Patek buyer profile but it doesn't sound like many others get this treatment on their first purchase or any subsequent purchase. In general, I know how much of a rarity this trusting act is for any item and I truly appreciate it. Good for you on 25 years of loyalty and trust.
