Papers or no papers?

I wanted to know your thoughts on this. Is it worth paying an extra £1000/$1300 for a Rolex with papers then one without?

For peace of mind you may want to do that. Especially if you want to resell it later.

What does the market say? Is that the typical cost delta?

I would not consider at all any Rolex without box and papers. it's also a sign of attention and care I appreciate in any seller

Always get the best condition watch. You won't wear the papers, and having papers on a crappy example doesn't compare to a watch-only pristine example. Having said that, a better condition example with papers will go for much more than +1000 USD than a so-so example without papers.

Well it would depend if the so called papers were a valid warranty as in the real world thats all they are.And again the so called papers or the plastic card are far easier to fake than the watch.Myself always buy condition of watch and not in most cases a outdated warranty bit of paper. As for the box its just a box and not the best box in the watch world, and no way would I pay a extra £1000 for one or a outdated warranty bit of paper.

to me this depends on the watch. if we are talking about modern watches, the fact there is no box and papers makes me question matters. this has become a necessity for collecting/reselling. its not a deal breaker but i also think it depends on which watch. if youre buying a datejust, i think no papers is ok. if youre buying a daytona, consider having them as it will be more important. with older/vintage, its more accepted; however, full sets go for much more with papers since there arent many. kind of a judgement call and totality of the circumstances argument.

Thanks for all the replies I’m looking to buy a datejust oyster quartz 17000 I can hardly find any with papers really difficult and when I’ve found them they’re £1500 over the price. If one without papers is going for £2200-2500 then one with papers is go for £3600-4 and over !

It will be very difficult to predict the future value of a watch, so it is almost impossible to evaluate the worth of full-set or paper. Some people say the difference is already priced in today’s purchase price, they probably don't fully understand what they are talking about.

On the other hand if you plan to hold it forever then the original full-set/paper is less important.

For a QZ DJ I wouldn't pay this much difference for the paper. However this is just me.

I prefer to have papers but condition is more important. I bought my watches to wear but keep in mind that in the collectible world the more supporting crap you have around a specific item the better price you get at the time of selling. With that said I wouldn't paid more than 10% of the current market price for a full set...

If its just for you to wear, it's not worth it. You can always get service papers down the road when its time for a service.

Ever tried to sell a watch without ? First question from any buyer "box and papers ? "
Easily worth the extra

I’m really in too minds because I would really want to pay more then 2.5k for this watch but then maybe if I do pay the extra it will be less hassle in the further.

I wouldn't buy without papers. And like others have mentioned, you'd probably have a hard time selling too given that you're not a known or trusted dealer.

On a modern piece, I would not buy a watch without it (expired or not). There are so many alternatives out there; it just takes a bit of time and I'm sure you can find the exact same watch with all the bells and whistles for the same/similar price.

On vintage piece, absolutely. For an extra $1,000 well worth it.

That is a ridiculous amount of money to pay just for "papers", unless you are looking at a rare collector piece.

That is twice as much as a good service, which would come with a fresh guaranty, would cost.

You certainly should never pass up a high-quality example without, for a marginal example, just because it has an outdated warranty card.

You want the best watch you can get for the money, not the best piece of paper.

Depend on my experiences , it is very hard to sell a modern Rolex without papers ( certificate ) .
Buy it with certificate if you are going to sell it one day ... even after years ...

Why not just wear the papers and forget about the watch?

No, no, no. It's all about the condition of the watch.
I usually keep the paraphernalia, however there have been times when I moved often (three countries in six years - and eleven different addresses within that time), tried to travel light which meant that the boxes went, papers usually brought, then disappeared, my trustee 116520 was always on my wrist which meant that most of the others were not, anyone buying those watches would have a rarely worn mint watch, how does that sound?

You can always send it for service and it comes back with papers
However always buy the seller. If you have any doubts, take it to an AD or RSC for authentication
The two watches that I will NOT buy without papers are:
KERMIT
16710 if you’re after a specific version and want to be certain it was born that way!

Complete set with box paper is more desirable. For some watches paper is a must such as the Kermit

for certain watches, it matters way more, but like the others say, peace of mind, resale ease plays a factor.

Skip the papers and save the money for a service from Rolex. You also have to consider the percentage cost of the papers, on a $20,000 watch an extra $1000 is not a big deal but would you pay 50% of the watch cost on papers for a $2000 watch, it just makes sense. Any collectable with all of the paper work from day one will sell for more but again it depends what you're paying for the item
