Which polar Explorer to seek?
So the polar Explorer has always sung to me, even a few years back when some kind of viewed it as an ugly step sister of the Rolex lineup. I'm find myself feeling more and more inclined to pull the trigger on a used one. However, I'm not too familiar with the references or what I should look for. I would get the 40mm and obviously make sure it checks all the boxes and doesn't have a service dial, service hands, etc. With that being said, can anyone help me with specific references of the polar Explorer or maybe explain the difference between certain references? Thanks!

If you want the 40mm the reference is 16570.
There's some changes that were made throughout the production that you can decide on. Tritium/Luminova, Folded/SEL, Holes/No Holes, 3185/3186. Mostly all personal preference on what you like, but certain things eliminate other options. An example is if you want Tritium you can't get a no holes case. So pick your most important features and work down from there. Early 2000's can get you holes, luminova and SEL so that seems to be a favorite. Another would be the late versions with the 3186, but you'll pay a premium. |

Agreed with above. I have a Y serial that has SEL, holes and super luminova. However I also see the appeal of a tritium and folded end links for a little more vintage feel. I think the 3186 movements are more for price speculators than enthusiasts as there is no difference in the performance of the movement on wrist.
