Hand Drag

I enjoy perusing vintage watch retailers like HQ Milton, just to look at the beautiful old Rolex watches they have on hand.

One thing I noticed a good deal on older watches is hand drag, causing (semi)circular defects in the dial.

Can someone please explain how hand drag can happen? It seems like the hands should be stiff enough to not "wilt" over time. Or is this related to poor service practices, etc?

Thank you for your comments.

I've seen this happen a couple ways on vintage.....

1) Hands get bent/degradation.
2) Watchmaker not setting the hands properly.
3) Dial aged with time and isn't completely flat anymore. (Though in this case.....wouldn't really be dragging on the dial....more like it shaves some markers barely).
