1680 Red on Chrono24

Saw this on Chrono24. Asking $16.5. Can I get opinions on it?

There's been quite a bit of chatter about Chrono24.com.
Do some searches and make your own conclusion. IMHO - not worth the risk.

There's no doubt the insert is wrong, so factor in an extra ~$2K for a proper one

Thanks. How can you tell if a dial has been re-lumed?

The response during and after illumination by both visible and UV light is a good way to start. Not foolproof, but helpful.

Comically bad fake dial I'd say.

Compare it with a real one...

What is it that tells you it's a fake dial. I'm trying to learn and I've compared this with a guide I saw online and I only focused on the writing but it looks just like a MK VI, so if there are some dead giveaways I would like to learn.

Thanks.

Is it the position of the "="?

One easy tell: look at where the t in ft is with respect to the ve in superlative, and compare it to the one below.

To start with, the only feet first dial with uneven ft crossbars is a Mk IV, but the 6s should be open. It’s a fake dial.

You guys are good. I prefer the older models but, never pull the trigger for exactly this reason. I would never pick up on that.

Thanks everyone for their input. I have a lot to learn about vintage before I purchase one. I have a local store here that sells vintage but his selection is limited. But probably better to purchase one from someone I know so that I know it's legit.

If you’re not sure, buy from one of the trusted sellers here in the classifieds.

This what makes me stay away from buying vintage Submariners. Everyone has its own issue and non of them are perfect. Plus many possibilities of fake parts from dials to hands, bezels to gears inside...

I'm just looking at getting one with a verified red service dial. Luckily these have not been faked yet. The vintage dials terrify me, especially now with high quality restorations and ofcourse fakes.

Honolulu Time has a safe in back chock full of vintage subs. The owner dad is a self proclaimed hoarder of vintage Rolex...Maybe check them out.

Thanks. I didn’t have much luck there but he knows I’m looking for one. I should stop in more often.

There are several other tells on this dial that are wrong but I don't want to help these dirtbags make a better dial by pointing out even more tells..so 42itus, if you're interested, I can PM you.

IMO, vintage Rolex, now-a-days, is indeed a scary world. You have to do a LOT of due diligence/research and even then, it's still a gamble.
