Rolex that surprisingly gets attention....

I have been blessed to own numerous Rolexs over 30+ years. Some undeniably understated others more "bling" in YG or Everose.

Very rarely have I had anyone notice or comment. That's why I have been surprised to have had several people ask or comment on my recently purchased YM42.

I had purchased it thinking of it as a below the radar addition. However, I have had several non WIS folks asking what it is and or just commenting on wrist presence, while last night a gentleman wearing a YG Sub at an adjacent table knew exactly what it was and asked to have a closer look.

Just thought I would share because it somewhat surprises me that of all models this one seems to draw attention. Also which watches in your experiences draws the most comments?

Had this 6 years...

never a comment, gaze, or question. For whatever reason I think the black bezel draws people's interest.

The black on black bezel with the rubber strap is pretty bad-ass.

Maybe the Yachtmaster gets more attention because it looks like the famous Rolex Sub, kinda

Before I got into watches, chronograph didn’t really catch my attention because they looked so busy, complicated and big

Maybe other people feel the same way

I am not sure

I have only received one comment on my Sub in 8 months of daily wear. But it was from a guy wearing a vintage Pepsi.

I noticed a guy wearing a Daytona Panda at the airport recently. It really stood out and looked stunning, but I’m sure I was only one of a few to actually take note.

Always liked the YM OF. Looks great in the flesh, on photos or the shop window. Just somehow it all goes together. Especially the RG 40

The larger the watch wears on the wrist - the more attention probably.

Got attention with it ?
Too bad for me - don’t like any watch attention.
The YM 42 was on my purchase list within the next 2 years, but after reading this, probably will have to obtain another WG item (=the Smurf)

You are certainly picking the wrong watch if you don’t want attention with the Smurf. That watch gets lots of comments and looks when I am wearing it.

Such a beautiful piece and really like the size. If I didn't have the YM40 rhodium dial, I would have went after this.

Believe it or not.. I clearly see that even my polar Explorer is known by some.. At this moment nearly everyone is into Rolex watches or wears a sub so perhaps they? Dunno.. I hate trends

also, to address the OP’s final query;

oddly, my Panerai 779 (luminor 8 days california DLC) gets more attention than almost anything i’ve ever worn. i chalk it up to the fact that it’s big, chunky, and black but completely under the radar dial-wise.

people are weird.

Quoting myself to add..

Could you comment/review on the YM42 vs the 116519 WG Daytona OF that you have? I ended up ordering the 519LN instead; Hope I made the right choice

They are both great and I hope you enjoy your watch. The Daytona wears heavier and thicker. In spite of being slightly smaller it feels more substantial.

The YM which I love seems to be resigned to being a casual piece in my opinion while the 519LN seems versatile for bathing suit to business suit.

Hope this helps and once again enjoy.

If it were available in steel at 40mm I'd be all over it. As it is, I find it too large and too expensive. But I definitely like the look.

I admit I'm surprised that Rolex keeps the YM line going when it's really just a variation on the sub, but it's a cool variation so I can't complain.

Then here you go that is a beauty! General public likely had no appreciation for its complexity. "What's that red dot imperfection at 6"? And such.
