Big Thanks and ? owning multiple watches
Long time lurker on this forum, one of my first few posts. First off, I just want to say thank you to all the members of this forum. The amount of knowledge here is second to none and I can really appreciate the passion that you all bring to this hobby. My family and I have been a huge fan of the brand for multiple generations. Ever since I was young kid, I was obsessed with my dad's Daytona and for the better part of my 20s and early 30s I had failed attempts of obtaining one that I wanted (new at retail). It was really a sick obsession.
After these failed attempts, back in 2014, after seeing it released at Basel, I was one of the lucky people who had walked into my local AD and was able to pickup a BLNR at retail price. I thought it was a really great watch back then and still do today, growing more fond of it each day. It has been my everyday watch and was happy for quite a while. Which brings me to my dilemma.... Over the last year, I can count on more than two hands the separate occasions where people have stopped me asking me about my BLNR. After looking what happened to the SS watch market, I stumbled onto this forum, and suffice to stay I am hooked again, obsessed actually. Knowing how impossible it has been for ordinary people to get a DaytonaC these days, I started looking at other options. The watch that really speaks to me currently is the WG OF. One of the most stunning watches I have seen in a while, and has become my grail. I know some folks arent crazy about spending $$$ on a PM watch with a rubber band, but I do not fall into this camp. I walked into the same AD I bought my BLNR from to see what I could do. The AD actually remembered me 5 years later which was great. He told me that the OF has seen a huge increase in demand because of the worsening SS shortage and as I was a repeat customer, he would happily put in an order for me for a $1k deposit and it would be here in a month or two. By putting in this order, he would also keep me in mind for anything that comes around that I would like. I love my BLNR, but I couldn't imagine wearing it ever once the OF gets here and told the AD I was considering selling my BLNR. He promptly told me I was insane for having such a thought, and I would regret that decision. He said he would accept the watch at a trade but only at the price I bought it at 5 years ago ($8,900) Here is my two part question: For those who had a watch previously and obtained another piece (grail or not), how often do you go back to your old watch and how do you incorporate it into use? Does it collect dust? For those who sold one watch for another because of the fear of not wearing the first watch, do you regret it or are you happy with your decision? Thanks in advance, happy to post some pics of the OF when it comes in. |

If you can afford to buy the new watch without a trade in do it. You're going to regret giving up the BLNR and after 5 years of wear you probably have a lot of memories with that watch.
I have 10 watches I wear in rotation from Seikos to Rolex and they all get pretty equal wrist time. Just because one is cheaper doesn't make me not want to wear it. I just rotate weekly so everything gets worn. |

Definitely don’t trade it in.
You can sell it to a grey for 2x. Or just keep it and sell it later as an investment. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Hi,
In my opinion the WG OF is one of the most visually pleasing daytona variations, the RRP is the same as the market price for the steel DaytonaC white face...in my mind there is no contest between the two-the oysterflex is the nicer watch overall. I have a collection of several steel/pm rolex watches and have always thought that if i had to just keep one it would be this one. It is extremely versatile and so flies under the radar for a PM watch, not to mention it is supremely comfortable on the wrist. I dont think selling the BLNR for the same price you paid is smart- you could make several thousand over that by selling to a grey dealer. The takeaway is that you absolutely cannot go wrong with the WG OF Daytona (in my humble opinion). Also i have noticed that they are now selling for up to £5k over the RRP! I would definitely not sell it. I wore my GMT II Coke for 8 years before buying my second Rolex, which was quickly followed by my third! I can’t imagine ever selling any watch I own because they all have their own stories. I plan to pass them down to my son one day so he can continue their adventures. I rotate them each week so they all get worn and every Sunday when I do the ritual switch it’s like reacquainting myself with an old friend.

If I could do it all over and be a one watch guy, I would. I would sell the BLNR for whatever best price you can get and enjoy the new white gold Daytona. For no reason other than simplicity, I would like to get down to one watch.

Welcome to the forum OP!
Like many here, I have several watches that I rotate through. However, to answer your questions, I have purchased several of what I thought to be my “grails” at the time. But I’ve never been a one watch guy. So I find myself wearing my new watch almost exclusively for a few weeks or month, but I always go back to a rotation cadence. I can’t see myself ever wearing just one watch. Many can, but I cannot. Regarding regret selling a watch, I have felt that somewhat. My collection has changed quite a bit over the last several years, buying, wearing for a while, and then selling/trading up. And I have missed some of those that I have given up, but I always come back to liking the watch(es) I traded up to better. I’m happy with my collection now and would not give any current pieces up for any that I have sold. My advice, if you can afford the new watch while keeping your current BLNR, then I would do that. Keep both watches for a while. See if in a couple months you are rotating between them both because you like them, not because you feel obligated to. If you find that you never wear the BLNR anymore, then sell it and stick with the new Daytona. Besides, you’ll probably make more money selling that BLNR to one of the trusted sellers around here than you would trading it in to the AD. Good luck! |

Have a DaytonaC and then purchased a 2014 sea dweller 4K (sons birth year). Rotate regularly as Daytona is work watch (M-F) and SD4k on weekends.
Don’t sell the BLNR - am looking to get this next (or possibly a smurf) and will rotate into the weekday wear, 2-3days one and 2-3 days other. However, if you want to sell the BLNR, let me know and I’ll give you more than $8500 for it! ;) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I wouldn't sell your BLNR. It was your first Rolex and selling it could be a recipe for sellers remorse.

Welcome. I would encourage you to get a rotation going. I don't have duplicate pieces, so this makes it easier for me. For example, for my job I need the time, date, and ability to measure elapsed time mon-fri, so my sub (16610) gets the call here. My speedy pro on weekends as I just need the time and no date, plus the strap options are versatile. My SS Daytona (116520) is largely a vacation watch as it is a sport watch, but looks great with swim trunks or a sport jacket. Its also water proof and can hold up to snorkeling, water sports, etc. It also lacks the date and the chrono is basically non-functional for what I need it for so it fits the vacation watch bill nicely. For me personally, I wear my watches as tools (no, my phone cannot do for what I need) and so they need to serve a purpose. So while i think about a GMT, I would never add it as it is basically a duplication. |

I currently have 8 and wear them all regularly, depending on mood, activity, attire, etc.

From a young age I have loved Rolex watches, and have wear them, and my only regret is having sold, unless it is a health issue I would never sell a Rolex again.

Rolex is a good foundation for a few pieces since it is hard to beat durability-wise. You’re off to a good start. Don’t sell. Let things linger first.

1. Think you're getting fleeced on the BLNR trade price.
2. I would always be careful about 1 way doors vs 2 way doors. The 1 way door here being parting with a piece that you can't get back since it's discontinued. Although I guess its a 1.5 way door here since you can still get the jubilee version. 3. I think generally selling your very first Rolex will be a regretting type of decision. I would add here unless you get a great trade price from another Grey to soften the blow of the PM upgrade. Seems like you have plenty of time to decide though while waiting for the OF. Leave the BLNR off the wrist for the week. Put it back on later to see if it sings to you. FWIW, I think the WG OF is a superb watch, but be careful if you're used to ruggedness of steel going to gold as the only watch. Just gets dinged much easier and deeper. Having said all of that, I could see a world where the WG OF was my only watch if I wasn't an outdoors person going hiking and rock climbing and such. |

Thanks all for the advice. I should have clarified, if I was going to part with the BLNR, I certainly would not trade, rather sell to grey. |

Wait for the "honeymoon period" on the OF to pass before considering selling the BLNR.

If you can afford to buy the OF without selling the BLNR, I would say to buy the OF and hold on to the BLNR for a while to see how that works. Give it some time and see what works best. It's not like the price of the BLNR will be dropping anytime soon.

agree; if the price does drop, it wouldn't be for less than the trade in value

I would echo holding on to your BLNR if you can afford to do so. I didn’t know about the fragility of PM watches but that would definitely factor in to keeping another watch around for rotation.
Finally, it sounds like you still enjoy wearing the BLNR. Obviously, you will WANT to wear your latest acquisition. Enjoy the new watch for a while but eventually you’ll want a change and you’ll have your BLNR waiting for you. At least that’s what I’m doing now with my latest purchase. I’m waiting to see the date change on my SS SkyD before rotating to another watch :) Best of luck on your decision. |

I definitely would not sell the BLNR right away. Not sure what else is in your rotation, but I personally would not want the WG Daytona on OF as a one and only piece. Adding the watch would result in you having an awesome duo between the two that can definitely co-exist with both getting wrist time. Of course there will be a honeymoon phase where you will be wearing the Daytona non-stop for a period, but I am pretty sure after some use you'll welcome the change of putting the BLNR back on. If that watch no longer sings to you at that point, then consider selling it.

I've sold many watches to buy others, and I've never regretted any sale as every decision was considered before hand and there was a reason for it.
