Air King

Thinking about adding it to my collection. I know some ppl think the dial is busy, but I love the clean look.

Any insight from current owners?

Air King

Absolutly love the AK! Beautiful watch, wears extremly comfy. Sold mine recently just for one reason ->Missing the “date” function.
If it had had a date it would be the ultimate SS Rolex for me.
Last wrist shot before selling.

I think it’s a good looking piece. It is also the same weight and dimensions as a Milgauss which is downright comfortable.

Translation by Google from my post on a Dutch watch forum.....

The Air King 116900 is a beauty beeing the only one in the Rolex program with a dial with 1/2 digit Arabic figures (5-55); crown in yellow and Rolex logo in green, sec. pointer green, white gold 3,6 and 9 and the anti-magnetic properties of the Milgauss included for free ...
Furthermore, a great size of 40 mm, pleasantly "flat"; wears it as a personal made watch... and "brushed midlinks" ... really a barely discovered Rolex model... all elements of "the past" in a unique modern layout!
And then that unique "low" entry price ... (still) ...
These are co-conditions for becoming a future Classic ...
By the way ... that very original "technical" dial with those subtle Rolex colors green / yellow should be allowed to work in on you. ... it is very different from all other Rolex models ... something new / refreshing and yet with the familiar Rolex elements of " in the past ”… a good chance that this Air King suddenly“ catches on you and that you get to know what a unique opportunity is (still) offered with this model ...

It’s a great watch. Great historical references as well. I believe it’s the only Rolex still in production that was created for a military purpose. In this case it was issued to RAF pilots soon after WWII. It’s a very under the radar Rolex and very comfortable. Just happen to be wearing mine as I type this.

Loved my AK. It was my daily for a year until I traded it for a Polar.

Love mine. Daily piece, understated and very comfortable. More practical then my datejust 2 with fluted bezel.

Love mine as well...very comfortable and unique. Not to disparage other points of view, but a key feature of this watch is that it does NOT look like a traditional Rolex. There are other references that appropriately achieve that. Add it!!

Was lack of lume a concern?

I don’t have an AK, so can’t speak from experience. But it’s a steel sports model and, in Canada anyways, the demand is there for this reference. I don’t think any discount is in the cards.

Would have liked more lume but not so important. I just like the yellow and green colors on the dial and it's more different than the other models. It's different in a nice way.

I’ve worn one daily for about a year and a half, and never get tired of looking at it. I used to really want a lot of lume, but over time I have not found in practice that it is important to me. The AirKing has plenty for my needs.

Lume is nice, but like the other poster mentioned, not high on my priority list. It has limited lume and functionally, I can tell the time. It is good enough for me

Heres my review of the 116900:

When you try it on the first time it will feel pretty heavy due to the faraday cage but you get used to it after a few days. It is kinda topheavy though and it shifts on your wrist a little bit. Mine ends up sitting on my wrist bone sometimes so if you like your watches especially loose fitting it will probably fly all around.

Its tough enough for daily wear. I am a righty and i wear watches on my right wrist for some reason so i lead with that arm and bash my watch around more than most people. Its held up great, mostly because its all brushed surfaces and no polish at all.

I love the dial, it is super playful and theres a lot going on there so you look at it a bunch. I think this add to the enjoyment to be honest. Its not as bold and over the top in person as it is in pictures that show a blown up shot of the dial only, the bracelet mutes it more than you think. I dont get much unwanted attention towards it although im hoping someday a watch nerd will see it and get excited that its the only one in the wild hes ever seen. thats another thing - if you live in a big city, im in NYC, you will not see this watch out anywhere, which is awesome.

Personally i think its an exceptional value and can still be had at msrp without any real waiting period.
