What Patek is doing RIGHT with DRESS/STRAP watches

On this forum, which is known to be sports-watch-centric, there seems to be a turning of the tide, even if ever so slightly.

The “dress” watch threads are more abundant. The content and support in the “itch” threads related to strap watches are more prevalent.

What gives?

I think it’s the more modern size of Patek’s dress watches and the move away from the typical dressy straps that used to go with them.

The 5524g on calf and now often shown with the dark strap is awesome.

The 5212a on calf strap (and a few pics with it on darker straps) likewise looks fantastic.

Even the 5270p and 5370p on more “fun” straps makes these “dress” watches less dressy and more causal.

The secondary market prices of these Nautilus and Aquanauts are inline to more than some of these more horologically impressive pieces. If you can’t own them all, then it’s easy to see why “dress” / strap watches are regaining interest and many are moving out of the sports models into the strap watches again.

I’d rather wear a 5270p or 5212a than a nautilus with jeans. But that’s me.

+1 on 5524 being a more modern dress watch. I get its not a WT or AC, but its not a Nautilus or Aquanaut! And yes, the size! 39mm is just too small.

Agree with brother Stephen......

I think the main thing is the size of the watch.....

That why I pick the 5146 because it a 39mm but look & wear like a 40mm....

The best part about it, I could change to a more sportier strap for casual and yet change back to formal......

Best of having both world IMHO......

I’d buy and keep more of them it they didn’t cost like 100-200k. I really like a few of them.

I like the 5170P on many straps with anything. The nautilus is such a classic though. I can wear it anywhere anytime even if I'm doing the dishes and not be afraid of getting it wet.

You keep banging out "test" posts and every one of them says "Mod approval required"...now we have a couple of pages of them to weed through... Do you think that a few more will do the job.

I wear my Nautilus and strap watches the same. Neither are going near the dishes, but that’s just me.

if I could swing it I would absolutely own and more importantly daily wear the 37mm 5140g on a more casual leather strap.

I don’t consider the 5524 or the 5212 dress watches. But even a so called dress watch can be worn with anything, I see many people wearing other brands, even inexpensive department store style dress watches with jeans. Only WIS types notice that.

I agree. I have seen gold tone watches on black leather going around Disneyworld park with the owner wearing crazy tee shirts and shorts. I notice but no one else does. and to be honest, it does not look awful. Wear what you like.

Agreed. Put something on a strap and many people will associate it with a dress watch. That’s just not the case.

Strap and jeans

Agreed. Contemplating a few dress watches as we speak: 5205G/R, 5320g, 5170g, 5172, or 5131r.

The stainless steel sports line is getting a little tiresome for me.

my 7 year old is almost there....

I am not obligated to do the dishes but I realize I get a lot of "goodwill" by doing so without obligation and of my own free will.

Watches and....ahem...other benefits.

Yes, but do you do dishes....I’m assigned this task for my household. It stinks, even when I bbq I have to do them. She won’t let me argue my way out of it.
I need another Patek even thinking about this

Yup, I do some dishes. I do some cooking. Depends on the night / schedules who does what.

Get another Patek already!

As I mentioned on another thread I think it has alot to do with the absence of Nauts and Aquas so attention switches to what is available as well as lots of side nonsense on sushi etc . The number of those sports incomings is at an all time low in my time here.

Update - Sushi and doing the dishes.

This is the true reason why SS sports watches are winning. Gone are the days of ordering the harem around in your dress watch.

Guys / I do laundry too. Don’t even get me started on our debate. I collect it (ours and the kids) wash it, transfer it to dryer or air dry, bring it out for her. She folds it and brings the stacks upstairs. She doesn’t even bring my pile up. If you listen to her, she’s doing 80/20.

Absolutely, most dress watches can be worn w pretty much anything but the 5524 and 5212 work much better in a casual environment than w a suit.

The INNER METAL RING of the dryer is death to many a nautilus or royal oak bezel for the whipped WIS man.
