How’s the prices on the PP dress watches?

Kind of curious... I don’t watch the dress watches as much, but be interested in other people’s observations. Whether it’s auctions or just greys.

I find that’s there’s generally better value to be had in dress watches as they’re less hyped up, and less “trendy”.
Just like you I don’t want the dress watches as much, simply because sports watches suit my lifestyle better.
But this was a heck of a lot of watch for the $$.

Decided to see what a few big-time grays would offer for my dress watch collection. VC performed best (40% loss across three watches), followed by Patek (5119J; about a 50% haircut). For Lange it was a total bloodbath (Saxonia 35mm; about a 60% haircut).

Kept all my watches.

I am not. The reality is that their watches are really great, but greatly overpriced. Patek can get away with it, but Lange is a niche brand in a niche industry. As such, their high MSRP and virtually unknown status results in brutal losses on the secondhand market.

Don't really know.

The Dato Up/Down in RG MSRP is $73k, $94.4K in platinum.

The Dato Perpetual MSRP in WG and RG is $136.6k

Here are all the new or unworn Dato's on Chrono:
https://www.chrono24.com/search/inde...US&SETCURR=USD

I see a RG perpetual for under $100k.

It’s one of a few watches I’d like to pick up but worried about value preservation especially since there’s nothing I’d bundle it with to offset the decline.

Separately given the decline in PP dress watches right off the lot,.. kind of irks me in the sense that I feel like they have overpriced the references...

For example the 5930g I bought out of the store was 87k I think out the door... the selling price is 55k in greys. Which means net to me it be $42k. That turns me off quite a bit.

If you want in new you will just have to accept if you sell it it will be a substantial loss.

Edit: here are Watchbox prices for the dato:

That is horrendous. Oh well, lucky I don't buy watches as an investment but to soothe my shattered ego

I don’t buy it as an investment neither ... but I don’t like losing money. Lol. And I don’t intend to. Only saving grace was it was a package deal with a 5711a lol. I can’t believe they had me package a watch... u know it’s peak pricing when that happens. Make ur VIP’s package a 100k watch to buy a $30k watch

It is an odd situation. Things may be changing very soon.

What is the MSRP for the 5390? Hodinkee has it listed as $73,712 back in 2016.

I am always bearish. More so these days. Grays are sitting on way too many 5711s Rolex GMTs etc. If the buyers don't come back very soon I am sure a gray with cash flow problems could crack and lower prices quite a bit. Then it will be interesting to see what happens.

Agree with u I been watching that market and I know a few guys which I like to talk to to gauge the market... people by and large are not buying new inventory and if they are it’s at significant discounts... some dress references can’t even be moved

I have started to watch the market in the last couple of months; still at a very amateur level. Watches are sitting, prices are being lowered but they are not moving. If there is not a change very soon, a gray will have to crack.

Be nice to be able to pick up some pieces at great discounts.

I for one would love to get a Dufourograph in the 20k range :)

Maybe a Chronometre Bleu at $15k

I do think in net terms. But I also adjust for a real transaction.

All transactions need to be net positive otherwise I wil not buy anything. U know how I roll. Even the crooked stuff
