Funny reaction
My mom knows I like watches and have a few nice ones and even provided some feedback on a Rolex I bought this summer. Like many on here, she appreciates the detail, quality and durability of a high-end product. She owns hand-bags, clothes, cars, jewelry, etc, all from luxury brands and runs a business dealing in high end home goods. All of this to say, the bar is high to get a reaction out of her when it comes to retail goods.
At a wedding recently, I wore my 5524G and was flying under the radar, not wanting to draw any attention from my family on what I might have on my wrist or if I have picked up anything recently. As my wife, mom and I were chowing down on some In’n’Out (yum) late one night, my wife brought up my new acquisition, the 5524G I was wearing and my mom asked to see it. I flashed it real quick and she said, “That’s not a Rolex”. I said, yeah, its nice and that it wasn’t a Rolex, but was just something I wanted. She then asked what it was and I said it was a Patek Philippe, to which she spit out (like in the movies) and choked on her bite of cheeseburger (animal style!). This reaction was priceless to me. I didn’t think she would know what Patek Philippe was or what it represented in the horological world or high end goods in general. She responded with a story about my grandfather, who in a different time in the world, would ‘gift’ a Patek Philippe to an executive, councilman, etc. to which he was trying to do business with. I found it interesting to hear her impression of the brand and what it stood for coming from someone not interested in watches specifically. Just thought I’d share. I don’t buy a watch to elicit this type of reaction, but it sure was funny to see it |

Nowadays it's an Omega. Can't get Rolex unless it's a female and she needs a 28mm with diamond bezel |
