The future of the Smurf?

With 2020 right around the corner, what are some thoughts on Rolex discontinuing the Smurf in white metal and making it an all steel model and maybe then making the Hulk a yellow gold timepiece only?

Lot's of people, including me, think that the Smurf will get released on SS. Lots of people don't. We'll see!

I really don't understand the point of speculating. No one has any actual inside information so what is the point.

Rolex may discontinue the smurf and replace it with something else. Or they might simply put the updated movement in it like many think will happen with the hulk.

But who knows. When Rolex releases a fugly clown looking blro with a blue dial and pepsi bezel anything can happen. Maybe they release the smurf in steel and keep it in white gold with a pink dial.

I highly, highly doubt Rolex will release the Smurf in stainless steel.

The company's vision is rooted in pushing precious metals to its customer base. Having the smurf in stainless steel would simply work against that goal, as you could imagine that demand for it would be through the roof.

Did you miss when everyone literally said the exact same thing you are saying now as justification for why Rolex will never release a Pepsi in steel when there is already a white gold Pepsi? Your argument is not a good one.

I did not know you could get Smurfs from a Rolex watch AD, and far as I know a Smurf was a Belgian comic and television franchise centred on a fictional colony of small blue creatures who live in mushroom-shaped houses in the forest. The Smurfs was first created and introduced as a series of comic characters by the Belgian comics artist Peyo (pen name of Pierre Culliford) in 1958, where they were known as Les Schtroumpfs. There are more than one hundred Smurf characters, and their names are based on adjectives that emphasise their characteristics, such as "Jokey Smurf", who likes to play practical jokes on his fellow smurfs. "Smurfette" was the first female Smurf to be introduced in the series. The Smurfs wear Phrygian caps, which came to represent freedom during the modern era.

The word “Smurf” is the original Dutch translation of the French "Schtroumpf", which, according to Peyo, is a word invented during a meal with fellow cartoonist André Franquin, when he could not remember the word salt.[3]

The Smurfs franchise began as a comic and expanded into advertising, films, TV series, ice cascades, video games, theme parks, and dolls. The Smurfs fulfil simple archetypes of everyday people: "Lazy Smurf", "Grouchy Smurf", "Brainy Smurf", and so on. All Smurfs, with the exception of Papa, Baby, Smurfette, Nanny and Grandpa, are said to be 100 years old. There were originally 99 Smurfs, but this number increased as new Smurf characters appeared, such as Sassette and Nanny. All of the original Smurfs were male; later female additions are Smurfette and Sassette—Smurfette being Gargamel's creation, while Sassette was created by the Smurflings but as far as I know none wear Smurf Rolex watches.

Whatever Rolex may or may not bring out next year is, to me personally, completely academic...only Rolex knows what they're going to do. But I can predict this: whatever appears I won't be able to get one, as I'm not prepared to go gray and pay over retail. Anyway, I'm very happy happy with my 14060! Just my personal thoughts...!

Ah... this guy.

When Rolex had made the decision to release the 126710BLRO (at least a year before its release in 2018) the global demand for stainless steel models was tepid, at best. Your objection is not a good one.

There has always been a high demand for stainless steel Rolex i don't know what the heck your talking about???? Steel sky dweller??? Steel Daytona??? Blnr and hulk. Was there not huge demand for these pieces before the release of the Pepsi? The SS demand went up before then.

Demand? Sure, there was demand. Just like there's demand for toilet paper, Corvettes, rumbas, coffee, pillow cases, and lamps. You could still stroll into an AD and walk out with a Submariner the same day.

But the point where demand grew so large to exceed the supply didn't blossom until late 2016/early 2017. By then, Rolex had already made the decision to design, create, and even price the 126710BLRO.

And the Daytona? It's been in demand for the past 20+ years. Sort of a moot point. Stainless steel Sky-Dwellers were on display at the Chicago boutique on Michigan avenue as recent as early 2018.

Why does demand for SS pieces mean Rolex will not create another high demand SS piece? You are making an assumption and pulling a relationship that does not exist out of thin air based on a theory with no evidence. isn't it more likely that things continue as they are with Rolex releasing a strong SS piece the last several years in a row????

No.

If higher stainless steel demand meant more stainless steel production, there would have been no shortage now, would there?

Also, you accuse me of "pulling a relationship that does not exist out of thin air." It's cute, but ultimately baseless. I'm using observed data to show that your argument that I've emboldened above holds little merit.

Oh, and a little reading for you from another company who's not willing to release stainless steel models to appease the masses:

I think Rolex will keep the Blue dial in WG motif exclusively for sports/professional models. So i dont think there will be a SS smurf.

If you want blue dialed SS rolex, have to get from classic line.

I really hope they make it a sunburst dial and alter the bezel color a bit. Looks too Tudorish for me

Just got the inside scope on the Hulk and Smurf.
Hulk will be discontinued in SS and will be released in platinum and white gold. The Smurf will now only be available in rose gold with a flex band.

There is no way they release a smurf in it's current iteration and just change it to SS.
