Explorer Question
Hello everyone,
Does anyone have the slightest clue what is Rolex going to do with the explorer in September ? I have been wanting to buy an explorer 39 for a while and finally I will be able to purchase it in November. Should I be worried that the explorer might be discontinued ? Maybe get it early ? I'm really not sure what to do at this point. Regards, Karl Sent from my M2004J19C using Tapatalk |

If you like it, get it soon, don't worry about what you don't know...

I wouldn’t stress it. When Rolex announces new models, they don’t pull old models from the shelf. Buy when it’s at your AD and you’re ready. I wouldn’t go out if your way for the 214270 because they have traditionally been a bit easier to find than Daytona’s, Subs, and GMTs.
Either way, good choice! The Explorer is a great piece. |

As has been pointed out, even if they do discontinue it this summer (unlikely), you should get your November watch.
The more general question of what Rolex might do with the Explorer with a new introduction, from my perspective, is that they will ruin it. But who knows? I wouldn't be surprised to see the 42mm available as a TT. There seems to be a lot of that going on. And I would be surprised if any change came in 2020. However, Rolex wouldn't be Rolex if we all knew in advance. |

Well the thing is that I will start browsing my local ADs at November that's why I'm worried.

If you like it buy it and enjoy it.
A new model may or may not come along, if one does then it will be 12-18 months before you get one, 12-18 months of not having that great watch on your wrist.

I'm guessing if Rolex does update the Explorer...it will just have a new 70 hour power reserve movement. Rest unchanged.

the Explorer has been around for 75 years, it should last a bit longer.

No way it gets discontinued. If there is to be an updated version I suspect it will be black dial w 3-6-9 config... basically no change (IMO)

And yes the Explorer was even discontinued several times over, to live again in a new iteration, like it did just a few years ago. In light of what's happening and the way Rolex is approaching upgrading its watches... First came Daytonas Followed by Day Dates Then GMTs Then the Sea-Dwellers(to include the Deepsea) Datejusts were next mixed in there I'm not an expert but I would say Subs are up next....(remember that Explorers 1 and 2 were upgraded a ways back). Also the Explorer's anniversary is coming up....... I would never say with certainty "never" or what Rolex would or wouldn't do as I literally ate my words when they released a stainless steel pepsi GMT, but I'm fairly confident in saying that the Explorer won't be discontinued in any way shape or form in 2020. |

Air King production stopped for a year to retool to the latest larger case and movement too, but was the Air King ever really "discontinued".

I think they would produce the explorer in yellow gold before they discontinued it.
It has too much history. New movement is overdue though.

No one knows. BUT, discontinuing the explorer would be surprising and totally inconsistent with their recent market efforts. They have been doubling down on their exploring past with the profiles.
The 70 hour movement upgrade across the Subs and Explorer makes sense and seems a reasonable guess. On my own, personal, wishlist is a glidelock bracelet - but that seems limited to the divers ( why is that? ) and has zero support in the real world. |
