A rare Rolex described as the "holy grail of vintage watches", once owned by a miner, has sold for £175,000.

Thank you for your help.
I hadn't realised the predicament of a link.
Unfortunately I don't have a third party option for picture uploading
The link is a genuine one to BBC news.

At least £217,000 including buyer's commission.

I'd expect it to be sold on quickly for a chunk more.

I would suggest that Paul Newman's 1968 Daytona may be the ultimate grail vintage watch. It sold for US$15.5 million at auction.

It's weird being the same age as old people.

No worries, and yes it is a good link.

Some folks just don’t like clicking links, which is not an issue for me when I’m on my iPad because it’s pretty well locked down as far as viruses and such.

Appreciate your posting this.

Why didn't someone offer more then?

The devil is as always in the detail.... I stayed out of the bidding as a friend was interested in it , on the basis he would take a ‘punt’ ( an each way gamble ) that the mark on the dial at 2 o’clock would improve .

The value of the piece is the dial condition , marks scrapes , blistering , chips demolish that value .

If it does it’s a win , if it doesn’t .... well ...

I’d bet H is right , it will have gone to a dealer prepared to make the same bet , given half the uk is shut down , same for Europe , travel in person is almost impossible I’m amazed it went so strong .

Why is this considered a grail piece?

Because of the extremely rare 3-6-9 explorer dial.

A number of possible reasons.

The auction was held in a very respectable, provincial English auction house near Bath (as it happens I have known the owners for years, bought one of my 5517s from them and another from one of their neighbours!). Especially in these times, not everyone could travel to see the watch there nor would they be willing to bid on it unseen. If a dealer is willing to bring it to them in the Far East or wherever, they might then pay a higher price.

Many people wish to buy from a dealer they trust, with a reputation to protect, demonstrated expertise and a responsibility to describe an item correctly. Rightly or wrongly, they may not attribute these things to auction houses. The provenance of recognised dealer X supplying the watch adds value.

There are many wealthy people in the world for whom the last £30,000 won't matter when they simply want the best example currently available to complete their collection or show off at the next boys' toys meet. They contact their trusted dealer and just task him with sourcing the right watch.

Jed could probably write twenty times more on this.

Its also nice to see the family held onto it for a considerable amount of time before they decided to sell it.

Yes, if you include the buyer's premium. Apparently the proceeds went to a great charity. I wonder if the buyer took a tax deduction.
