Icon20 Datejust 41 or Datejust II?

I have a 2019 Submariner Date and I unfortunately don’t love it. I’m looking at purchased a pristine pre-owned DateJust II 41 with a black dial, fluted bezel and oyster bracelet (116334). It doesn’t come with box or papers but it was recently serviced and being sold by Bob’s Watches. On the other hand, I’m also on a waiting list at my AD for a 2020 Datejust 41mm. Same black setup as described above. I keep reading online that the new 41 is “smaller” than the DJII. I like larger watches. Coming from a Sub, do you think I’ll like the DJII over the DJ41? Thanks for the input!

DJII is bigger than the DJ41. Noticeably bigger even though they were both marketed as 41mm. I have a 7.5” wrist and like the look of the II better. I don’t think they had enough dial options for that line and it wasn’t until much later the smooth bezel became an option. YMMV but I’m surprised by people that have noticed mine and commenting that it looks different than other DJs they’ve seen.

I would wait for the Datejust 41. Newer movement with a 70 hours power reserve rather than 48 and better proportions (imho). Also, I rather have a warranty card.

DJ41 is smaller and looks better due to being better proportioned IMO.

This can totally become an old sub vs new sub debate.

The DJ41 has a ton more options, smaller at 39.5mm, new movement and in my opinion the proportions are more traditional. I debated between the two for awhile and went with the DJ41 mainly because the batons aren't so bulky. Its all personal preference, one is not objectively better than the other. For reference i have a 7.5" wrist and feel its kind of perfect and I prefer watches on the larger side.

The DJII was designed to be "bold", to have wrist presence. The DJ41 is more faithful to the DJ heritage.

If you like bigger watches go DJ II.

Have a silver dial 116334 and I want a TT DJ and can’t get over how much smaller the DJ41 is. So much so that I’m looking for a pre owned example of a DJII.

I’m not bothered about the power reserve as it’s only an extra day and not a deal breaker for me.
Not many people know that the Datejust II has the updated calibre 3136 which has high performance Paraflex shock absorbers.

I have both a DJII and a 41. The bezel is very robust on the DJII and very masculine. The 41 is more proportional and does look smaller but is a terrific size. I sold 2 DJ 36 as they were too small for my wrist. I like having one of each. Good luck on your choice.

I thought it was always assumed the DJII was a mistake (although never admitted by Rolex) and the DJ41 is effectively the same watch but (fixed) better proportioned. If you like chunky watches you'll prefer the DJII. I'd wait for the DJ41 personally. There is plenty of content on YouTube to research so you can decide which you prefer.

Wow, I never knew the DJII looked that much larger than a DJ41 in the flesh. Crazy what just 1.5mm can do in the case of this watch.

So having said that, I think it’s purely just preference/wrist size/etc. I don’t think the proportions look bad at all.

Bob’s Watches has a DJII 41 Black Fluted on an oyster for $8,100. It doesn’t come with box or papers but it was just fully serviced and has a 1-year warranty. Does that sound like a good deal?

I like that price... but I would definitely try a DJII on before buying one — unless you know for sure you have the wrist for it.

Will definitely do that! I’m 6’2 with a 7.5 wrist.

How does the DJII 41 compare in size to my current Submariner Date 40?

Overwhelming majority agrees that DJ41 is proportioned better. Go with that!

It’s a lot bigger. Probably 4mm larger lug to lug.

Considering you have 7.5” wrist go the DJII

Here is a comparison of the DJII amongst a couple of 40mm 6dig Subs

Gorgeous watch, especially the azzuro hnnng

On my 6.75” wrist

Welcome to the forum

Coming from a Submariner and liking larger watches, I’d go with the DJ2

I’m looking at the exact model you are looking at buying (I’m not in market for it, don’t worry lol). I think it looks good. IMO, It’s not proportioned any worse than the DJ41, which I own, especially for a larger wrist. I think most who say that, just prefer it being smaller anyways.

I would be happy with either the 41 model or the II model. But, I would prefer brand new vs 7,8, or 9 years old. So it comes down to you. Do you think brand new vs almost maybe a decade old is worth an extra $2k? Up to you. But I’d think you’d be happy either way.

DJ2 for the win.
I like them so much I now have four in the collection.
It’s strikes me as odd that when Rolex are generally going larger in their line up they discontinued the DJ2 for the 41.
Now the 41 is a beautiful watch, but it’s more of an upscaled DJ36.
The DJ2 has a sporty but undeniable Datejust look about it and prices for them second hand have been on the up since they were discontinued.
Mine aren’t going anywhere.

As a DJII owner I never realized DJ41 looked so much tapered. For my wrist size I would prefer the 41, plus it's got the upgrade in the movement.

But like others said, if you prefer bigger watch, then DJII is the way to go.

This is a comparison of my DJ II and the 116610LN:

I had a beautiful blue Roman DJII that was really a stunning watch. Problem was it never really felt right on the wrist. Just looked bloated. Eventually I sold it and although never replaced with another DJ if I had it would be the new 41.

II more sporty, larger, robust

41 more elegant, smaller, dressier

I prefer the II primarily due to the larger diameter. If you prefer larger watches go with the II. It is a true 41 mm watch. The DJ41 measures roughly 39.5 mm across the case.

I think the II is around 49.5 mm lug to lug and the Sub is around 47.2 mm lug to lug. Lug to lug on the 41 is around 47 I think

For a larger wrist (and mine is ~8") I prefer the larger lug-to-lug dimension. At 47 the Sub wears very small on my wrist. The II is a watch you can wear with a suit but also looks great with a t-shirt. Very versatile watch IMO

^^^ What he said. The DJ II is a sporty watch because of its size and proportions. The DJ 41 wears much smaller. I like them both, but for different purposes. Once you wear a DJ II, the DJ 41 seems a bit petite, wearing more like a DD 40.
