Go grey GMT or start with a DD?

So the two watches I’m really looking to add to the collection next are a Pepsi GMT and a DD40 in YG with white dials.

However getting the Pepsi from an AD at this point is super difficult but could be bought new for ~$20k from a grey. The DD would be ~$36k from an AD....

So the question I’m trying to answer for myself... is do I spend the money on the DD and hope it gets me a Pepsi sooner from the AD or do I spend the $20k on the GMT and wait to buy a DD?

How would you guys approach this?

If you want both and can afford the YG DD, get the DD and start to develop that relationship. I'm sure the BLRO will be yours at retail sooner than you think that way.

I see you have a TT Sub and DJ in the collection, did you get them from the AD you would be buying from with the potential Day-Date and GMT?

The sad part is - gold watches are in demand and are starting to become scarce. In the old days, buying a PM Rolex usually got you a SS that you wanted but times are a changing. So I would ask the AD what would be the chances of a BLRO with the PM purchase. If they are good, and you want the Day-Date in the collection and can swing it - add the Day-Date from the AD and wait on the GMT.

Unfortunately I bought my TT sub, my DJ41, and wife’s DJ from another AD in California when we lived there but that AD lost their Rolex AD status. So I’m starting from scratch.

I do think the YG DD I want could be somewhat difficult to source for them but not that impossible. But I guess what I’m wondering is does a PM day date actually get me any further on the list... makes me go why not go grey for the gmt and get the DD at some other point in the future from an AD or Grey...

in your case going for a bundle is actually worth it. if your financial situation permits i would shop around ADs and see which one can give you a pepsi if you buy the DD. i think you might find an AD that will be willing to give you both together rather than just adding you to the "top" of a list

right now DDs are selling for above retail on the grey market so i think a bundle through an AD makes the most sense rather than going grey for both where you'll overpay for both

I like the approach, I’m just not sure I’ll be able to actually pull it off...I’m in a pretty major market (Dallas) so...

Wait on the DD just 6 months ago you could get a DD 40 for under 30k new. The prices shot of big time. If you can wait
It out the prices should come
Back down ? I wouldn’t buy from an AD unless it was a bundle on the spot if it was my
Deal

I’m In Dallas also not a lot of stock unless you dealing with a gray like timepiece gentleman. I know bachedorfs is about to open the boutique up soon if it hasn’t already

DD40s have skyrocketed in price from the gray dealers. Most dealers are asking MSRP or above for DD40s now.

If you buy from an individual seller or a less known gray you may be able to get a tiny discount but not much these days.

The DD won’t help and if the AD says it will, it’s likely they will be lying (IMO)

The DD wont get you a blro. That may be an issue. It may get you a batgirl though.

Based on what you guys are saying, and the feedback from some other people here in DFW...getting the DD from an AD probably won’t helps me get the BLRO but it’s worth a shot in asking.

If gray DD prices stay up it’s probably best to get the DD and wait and see on the BLRO? Or wait for the DD prices to come down and buy both grey...man no really good strategy here if you want them fast.

If I’m willing to wait up to a year for the GMT from my AD...would it make sense to buy the DD and wait to see what happens? Then I could be at the mercy of an even tougher gray market...

Id save myself a few k on the dd 40 and go grey. Just my 2 cents.

Ive wanted a blro since day 1. Also wanted a gold subc. I went with the gold subc at grey prices. Glad i did. My ad offered no discount and it would have run me 9k over what i paid.

Eventually i may get the blro or i may just skip it and get a white gold model next. Good luck.

I can save on sales tax on the DD (about $3k in savings) going grey which is pretty significant.

I guess it comes down to if I can pull of the bundle at the AD....

Obviously I’m not familiar with Dallas ... I’d have thought a DD at retail would get you a BLRO.

Bundle or go grey. A lot of grey dealers are reputable jewelers. They aren’t all watch flippers.
The “build a relationship” game is a salesman’s game. You don’t build the relationship by getting watches they know you wanted anyway.

If you want a DD down the road I would just grab it now. Then pay retail for the Pepsi eventually

There are ADs in DFW area who will do the bundle deal. However, to get the BLRO as part of the bundle, you will have to wait a while. There will be few folks before you, who have already made such deals.

It does not hurt to ask.

Care to share which ones? I know Govindji’s wanted to sell me a gold skydweller in order to gat a Daytona. I had no interest as I was previously told by them a Daytona would be 8 years instead of right now with the “bundle”

There is no way to determine what the AD will do with your proposal. Do they have the DD you want in the case? Then buy it. But don't expect that purchase to get you anywhere on the list because there are many clients before you who have spent $$ and are also waiting for their BLRO. My experience with working with the AD, the only thing that will get their attention is to spend more. Which means buying things you don't want. Get the DD at retail then shop around and get a BLRO on the secondary market. If you get the call for the BLRO then sell one or give one away.
