I think I might have just saved myself from a SCAM!
So check this out fellow TRF members. I had recently posted up a for sale thread to sell my Explorer II. I got contacted through a PM by "pat001." She has zero posts and tells me she will offer be $2,900 through bank wire transfer. She wanted me to send the watch in the cheapest method(which I found very odd because I would want it insured and sent express). So I sent her my bank account/routing number and I also asked for some sort of ID so I can prove that she is who she is. Then she states that she will be using her friend's bank account to send the money because her bank will charge a fee and what not. Anyways, here are the PMs that was sent back and forth with the member.
I wonder if its possible if she can access my bank account with the information(bank account/routing number) that I gave her. I think this user should be banned. Moderator's please take a look at this carefully. pat001 - would you take $2900.00 cash inc ship. you can ship it the cheapist way to you. me - he watch is yours. How will you be paying for this transaction? Where are you located? pat001 - let me know what is easiest for you. i can send it through a bank wire transfer. i'll need to send out tommorow afternoon through my girlfriends bank(desert schools federal credit union) im in arizona. if that's allright let me know and i'll get it to you by the end of the buisness day.pat me - I bank with XXXXXX. XXXXXXXXX is the account number, and the routing number is XXXXXXX. Please send total amount of $2950.00USD. I would also like to verify your shipping address for shipping purposes. If possible, I would like to see a scan of your ID just to prove that you are who you are. pat001 - i can call you as soon as the transfer is complete. or if their is another means of payment. pat001 - thankyou for thr info. the only issue i do not have a scanner but the name on the account from desert school federal credit union is marites jordan. the address is 5431 east. shea blvd scottsdale 85254. i can send you via fax a copy of ID tom. am if you want me to. pat001 - hey do not what happened also working on a deal with a pam 114 for the same price i need to know so i can let someone we have/don't have a deal. me - It seems like we have a deal but it's not kind of suspicious that you will be using your friends bank account number? Why is that? I am also going to call your friends bank to make sure that she knows of this transaction. Since the watch is expensive, it would be stupid on both parts to not do a background check, etc. Give me a ring tomorrow 443 801 2295 before you go to the bank. pat001 - that's fine her bank does not charge a wire fee, we have a friend that works their, and there open till 6pm our other bank closes at 5pm. we have to get our kids from school and doesn't leave much time, but i understand. pat001(sent today after she said she would send a copy of her id) - i don't even know you're name, anyway's my girlfriend is very upset. she thinks that you are discrimanating because i'm a female and she is a female, asking us for phone numbers, pic. of who we are, etc, who cares where your money comes from. her exact words were go back to serving our country you alway's bending over for the soap/slanted eyed male fucking pig keep the watch. but kisses we are both asian. you could have asked for refrences. me - The last PM you have sent proves how ignorant some people are. What kind of references would I get from you when you have zero posts? I think I just saved myself from a scam. BTW, you shouldn't buy a Rolex if you are worried about petty fees, go get yourself a Anne Klein or a Fossil. |

I hope I made the right decision. I called my bank to put a hold the account. If there is a moderator reading this, please ban that user. Thank you.

I find out the name on the address given by the member. The name is Nelly Ballonoff, not "pat." I also googled the name along with the city and found these websites. The first one is a warrant with his/her name on it, with charges of money laundering. The second website listed, is an article of termination by the Arizona Corporation Commission. Wow, this is really getting creepy.

You were far more polite than this individual deserved. The law and/or divine justice will take care of this one.

DO NOT DO ANY TRANSACTIONS WITH THIS MEMBER!
UPDATE - this is a pm sent by "pat001" at 7PM EST pat001 - do not worry were not those type of people. in fact just did another deal on a pam, so now maybe next time all anybody has to do is ask for a refrence, thanks anyway's me - Do not worry? In fact, I should warn who the person with the PAM so he/she won't go through with that deal? The seller will be cautious and wary just like me, if you mention the fact that you will be using someone's bank account. |

I'm glad you put a stop to the deal!!!
I'm also curious to know how a bank wire can go wrong...i.e. giving your account number and routing number allows someone to access your account and take money out. Is this really possible? |

We use BSB and Account number for transactions and the account holders name here in AU, its pretty hard to take funds out of an account just with these numbers unless you hack into online banking.
The other senario is cheque washing where stolen cheques can be alterd and or cleaned giving the scammer access to pop on what they want. I recent had a client contact me where he exboyfriend and his sister wandered into a the bank and defrauded my client of just over $150,000 against the euqity in her home loan, no information only the account number, but his sister did all the talking and the bank is not liable for all losses considering the AFP fraudsquad have locked up all trust accounts on both sides of the fence. Looks like the banks have to reconsider security me thinks!

I had my Omega on WatchSeek for sale November. A guy from Ireland siad he would take it, and sent PayPal right away to my account. He didnt even bother sending shipping costs also. When i saw it he was from out of the USA, and his address was not confirmed by PayPal i broke the deal off. He didnt ask if i would send over seas, and nothing about shipping costs. He got mad, but im not taking any chances. Ron

you are, but chances are you aren't handing a check over to someone who is purposely trying to defraud you. Anybody ever done a check over the phone? I believe its called ACH withdrawal? before the days of the internet, I used to do it to make a credit card or student loan payments-same deal. They just ask for bank acct., routing number, a check number and name on the check. i can't even remember if they needed/asked for an address. scary indeed.

The bank is 100% responsible for any fraud that occurs to your account if you are not negligent or responsible. If this wasn't true, none of us would have any money in our bank accounts, the criminals would have cleaned them out many times over.
The two links given by willo probably do not provide all the facts from these two particular examples. Just because it's posted on the internet, doesn't mean it is 100% accurate or true!!!!!!!!!!!

so is the message here to not be cautious, because that is all i'm saying. telling people that the bank will have their back is just not very sound advice. the onus will still be on you to provide proof you did due diligence before handing over your info. lastly, you are right, just because its posted on the internet does not make it true, but one of the links i provided is from the irs website. i don't know, seems pretty trustworthy to me if the irs is posting a warning on irs.gov about this practice means that people are and have been taken. and like i said before its happened to me and i gain nothing by staking claim to such a dubious honor. |

Your bank account number and bank routing number is on every check you write. Anyone you write a check to has that info. All they need is check stock to start printing checks with your info. Willo also writes that I said, "telling people that the bank will have their back is just not very sound advice. the onus will still be on you to provide proof you did due diligence before handing over your info" What I wrote was, "The bank is 100% responsible for any fraud that occurs to your account if you are not negligent or responsible." Again, the IRS rebate scam is alive and well. All it takes is one internet vulture with a computer and the scams are endless. Hope this clears the confusion from my previous post.

When you accept bank wire transfers, wait three days to make sure it is cleared. My on-line stock trade place also has a three day wait on new funds.
If I were to buy a $3000 watch from you, I would understand the need for a wait time to secure the funds. Money (or the thought of it) just blinds some people I guess. Better to be safe... |

Good catch. It sounds like you came as close as you would ever want to, to a scam. My stock trading shop makes me wait three days after a wire transfer, before I can use the funds. I think this is just a good idea. If I were to buy a $3000 watch from you, I would understand 100% if you asked me to wait three days to secure the funds, before shipping it to me. If I sold you my GMT, I would have you wait three days (I would tell you before). Again, good call. |

Yup you sure are. And someone can just make a check with your routing numbers on it also. I once sent someone a check without a signature on it and my bank put it through no questions. When I questioned the bank I was told OH! we cant look at every check that clears on your account! scary indeed!
