total newbie here... please be gentle...
I know virtually nothing about Rolexes, but just bought one. Yeah, I know (LOL). I guess I'm just looking for opinions and reassurance that I got a fair deal. This forum obviously has a lot of folks who really know their stuff. A 1957 Oyster model 6480 caught my eye a while back, I think I first saw it on ebay. A very "plain jane" watch, nothing fancy. Part of the attraction was that I was born in 1957, and I thought it would be cool to have a Rolex made that year. And I liked the clean, understated look of it... you could wear it and no one would even know what it is, unless they looked very closely.
Anyway, I finally pulled the trigger on it. Took it to a local authorized Rolex dealer to have it sized, need 2 links removed. They confirmed it is authentic, and told me the serial number is 301099. That jives with the serial number lookup websites that it is a 1957. I asked the guy what it was worth, and he bailed, just said - it's worth whatever you're willing to pay for it. OK, I get it, but that's no help. I'm really not sweating it, it's not a ton of money... but just curious, you know? Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated. And I apologize if I posted this in the wrong forum. Tried to post a direct link for pictures but got error message. Just go to the Chorost & Co website. |

I assume you took it to Hales in Greenville......
If you want a value, then just look at other completed listings on EBAY for similar watches. That is what people are willing to pay.... |

The price should depends on the condition of the watch.
You can search the estimated price on the internet using the word "Rolex oyster 6480" and see the price on Chrono24.

I believe this is the watch in question. The experts will correct me, but it is a Tritium dial, and I don't think Rolex started using Tritium until the early 60's. So this would indicate it's a either a Service Dial, or later than 1957. Otherwise, it looks like a nice watch. |

of course the band is not original to the watch, as it's dated 1972. But a beautiful watch!

Thanks to everyone who responded, I was pleasantly surprised...
I was a bit hesitant to join this forum, and appreciate the welcome. Having now perused more threads and seeing all the pictures... damn, you guys have some fine watches. I fear that I may have been bitten by the Rolex bug now...
A little side story for your amusement. My last name is Bond, so of course my nickname has been "007" or "double naught" etc my whole life. And this week we lose the one, the only, the coolest James Bond ever... which apparently did a lot to popularize Rolexes back in the day. |

IMO, $2800.00 is a bit North of what I would pay for a watch like this, but I do remember a time when models similar to this could be bought for $1200.00 and below. I really don't think you did bad though, as prices are trending higher for all Rolex these days. It's a cool watch, enjoy it! |

If you like it it’s worth every penny. I know you know that, but when what matters is when you believe it.

Just an update... it's very accurate, so far. Loses about 5 seconds a day as best I can tell. That seems pretty dadgum good to me, for a manual wind watch from 1957...
I couldn't be happier with it. Love it. |

It looks great, Syd. "Plain Jane" minimalist classic styling. I like it!

Hello from Spartanburg, and a belated welcome aboard! That's definitely a good looking piece. Love the dial and you are dead on correct about the simple beauty of such a piece... at least in my opinion!
Be careful of being bitten by the Rolex or the watch collectors bug. It's a very real and enjoyable thing. |
