Trying to Find a GMT Master II for MSRP, is it possible?
Hello,
This is my first time here and I'm hoping people here can help me understand what is possible. I'm interested in a GMT Master II from an AD, but everywhere I have called they are saying the wait is either months or years away from getting one. I was wondering if anyone has gotten 1 already and what they had to do to get 1? Questions: 1. Do you need to have a long standing relationship with an AD to get first dibs? 2. Any idea what the manufacturing volume is right now for a GMT Master II? This will be my first rolex and am also looking at the explorer II as I like the white dial version. Thank you all in advance! Possible - most things are possible. Unlikely however.

Anything is possible. But odds are probably against it. Lots of factors involved. Prior solid relationship is key with some luck too.

1) Yes you need a history to score a GMT. Remember they have 20-30 or more people ahead of you wanting the same piece.
2)Rolex doesn’t release volume/numbers on models they build. Only rumoured numbers I’ve heard is they make appx 800,000 to 1 mil watches a year for their entire lineup. COVID decimated that however. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong senior members. |

It is maybe possible.
But you can instead DEFINITELY buy a 16710 GMT Master II in great condition and many like that watch better. |

Explorer II white dial was my first piece which I purchased with no history. Even now with that purchase plus a fair amount of jewelry for my wife I am still waiting for the BLRO.

It’s possible if you buy 2 day dates at once.

And you don't even see Day Dates in cases anymore, and their prices are going through the roof as well.

It’s possible at MSRP from AD. But you have to do the leg work to find one that’s honest. I’m lucky to have been shopping with the same AD since before the Rolex marketing strategy change. Not a big spender by any means especially not compared to the local whales that spend money there. I’m honest with them, they’re honest with me. I did have to wait 6 months though which is the longest I have waited for a watch.

The odds are against you sadly. Grey market really is your option for a GMT

I got one yesterday from my AD in London. I've been on the wait list for just under 2 years and in that time have bought a Datejust 41 (from the same AD chain at Heathrow) and then a sub no date from my AD. I've been in touch with the AD regularly and think he knows i'm not a flipper which is why i was successful.
If you want one quickly you are going to need to be very very lucky or spend up. |

Well of course it’s “possible”, just like a 100-1 horse wins the grand national.
However highly unlikely if you don’t have a relationship with an AD, so if you want instant gratification then go grey. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I would recommend you visit AD’s in your area and select one to build a relationship. AD’s get many calls each day from people looking for the hot Rolex models so you need to talk to them in person to get any serious consideration.
It helps to have some purchase history for sure. Once you make your initial purchase, even if it’s a trinket, jewelry, or inexpensive other watch brand, it gets your name and info in their system. Tell them to call you if any Rolex models become available and provide a couple models you are especially interested in obtaining. Stop in every 3-4 weeks and look around and remind them in a low pressure manner that you are still interested in those Rolex models. It may take a little time and effort, but once you develops a relationship and they realize you are a genuine buyer and not a flipper, you may be surprised at what you are offered. Some areas have more buyers than others so the gray market is always an option as well, but GMT’s currently hold a high premium. Good look with the hunt. |

It's certainly possible. Stopped by my local AD for the first time about a year ago to have my 20 year old DJ serviced. Told the SA about SS models on my wishlist. He took my name down. Got a call about 2.5 weeks later, and purchased a 116610LV as MSRP. Since then, got offered a 126622 YM rhodium dial which I turned down. Then last week, got a call for a 126710BLNR, which I picked up 2 days ago at MSRP. No other big purchases from the AD. So it is possible, just have to be patient.
Good luck in your search! |
