there has been a history of misaligned serial / lug engravings by Rolex but I think this might be pushing it....

Dunno. I've seen genuine vintage Rolexes and Tudors with very poorly engraved serial numbers. Quality control wasn't what it is today.
The serial number engraving isn't the best way to tell whether it's genuine or not. Need close-up pics of the whole watch. |

Looks questionable, but as mentioned above these old engravings can be sloppy sometimes. I would use this as just one clue while evaluating the entire case/watch.

Very common on an older watch. The engraving back then werent as precise as they are today.

I don't see any issues with the case engraving. The pantograph engraver was not a perfect engraving machine.
Here are some examples for comparison.

I'd still like to see a better, clearer photo of the entire engraving on the OP's example. It might be fine, but if I were considering buying this watch, I'd insist on a better photo to fully evaluate, more like the great photos Springer posted.

Hi everyone. Thanks for all your comment. I asked fro better pictures. The watch is a GMT from 1982, just to give an additional detail.

I can't comment on originality but one of the photo posted by Springer have only few hundred numbers of difference from the opener, and is a GMT!
I'll say that it really looks like the same hand/pantograph Screen Shot 2021-05-10 at 4.38.15 PM.jpg Screen Shot 2021-05-10 at 4.38.10 PM.jpg |

Gosh, well spotted. Springer's engraving defects are *exactly* the same as the OP's. Must have been the same engraving machinery.

Back then, Genuine Rolex serial number engraving was far from perfect because it was done by hand and if you would compare two new genuine models back then ( lets say 1980-1990 ) you would find out that both watches had different text alignments. |

Not all counterfeit watches use laser engraving for serial and/or model numbers. The counterfeiters have become artists and engrave fakes as close to the original fonts as possible. My experience has been that laser engraved watches are normally very amateurish.
