Asked AD for GMT

I thought i would start this thread and keep it updated as an example of "real world" dealing with an AD as I am not a high roller. Background is I live in major US city and we have a nice family owned AD that i have shopped at for some time including 2 Rolex purchases (Explorer 1 in 2004 for 40th birthday and Sub in 2019). We have made several other purchases there over the years but nothing too pricey and mostly < $1k. When I asked for the Sub in fall 2019 I dealt with the owner's daughter and expected to wait best part of a year, she called me 3 weeks later! Anyway fast forward we went in yesterday to purchase a Cartier for my daughter ($8k watch), not in stock but are working on it and hopefully will have it in time for xmas or soon thereafter which gives me a reason to visit again a couple of times to pick it up and then get it sized. While I was there I expressed interest in a GMT, they sort of politely laughed but took down my particulars and asked me if i had a preference within GMT (no) and / or a second choice model which I took as somewhat positive. So with some decent history and the Cartier purchase, when it happens, we will see what happens next. I will update after we get the Cartier but I will say I am somewhat hopeful and don't feel like my interest went into the round file.

Good luck with the GMT. Hopefully they deliver. All the "Family Owned" ADs in our neck of the woods are long gone. It's a sign of the times as Rolex continues to move up market. Each of the dozen or so that we had within a 50 mile radius had many fans of the brand on their waiting lists when Rolex pulled the brand and moving to a larger market AD and trying to re-establish the relationship and get on a list (if at all possible) poses quite a challenge.

Just curious, does you AD name start with a "B", "M", or "T". I, too, live in Atlanta. Thanks.

I'd prefer not to identify the AD, sorry.

I meant to add that when pressed on a second choice I said Milgauss which I genuinely like but not sure I would buy. They said those are harder to source than a GMT which is a relief in a way. Anyways, they called shortly after I posted and are getting the Cartier so will go in and visit them when it arrives and see what they say now they have had a chance to study my history and their 4 dimensional EOI model LOL.

OP, I think you're doing the right thing. just keep buying. My family keeps on buying and generally we get them. Real collectors keep buying anyway.

Hey, one of those was my secret, out of the way AD....luckily I have some older history and did buy a Tudor GMT this year. Also, had some mutual friends with one of
the owners....

I have no idea how many dimensions - just a joke reference to some of the speculation about how the '"lists" work...

It's impossible to say for sure and I'm just speculating. My subjective take is that if they ask for a same model wish list and/or a second choice, they are testing for flippers. Some people just want a Rolex or a particular Rolex model and will be happy to take what they can get. Unfortunately, so does somebody who wants to buy it at MSRP and gouge it.

If I was selling, I'd be looking for someone who wanted a particular model and stuck to their choice. But that's just me. In any event, I wish you luck with it.

My money is on Brown. Only question is which daughter the OP is referring to. My money is on Sara Beth.

Edit: to the OP….good luck.

Good luck!

The bolded seems a bit hard to believe. Maybe they receive more GMTs than Milgauss, but I can’t imagine the number of inquiries for Milgauss even begins to approach requests for GMTs.

Agree on the MG but thats what I heard.

On the flipper question, I wore my Sub and pointed it out, not much more you can do to prove intent other than seem genuinely interested and excited in the GMT and explain how you want the option to wear either. I honestly think we are good there, what I don't know is how many Rolex "whales" are ahead of me!

Good luck. My guess is you’ll end up with the rootbeer since you didn’t specify. A spectacular piece but the “least difficult” to acquire GMT.

no, the least difficult should be the batman.

Batman is produced in larger quantities than TT Root Beer, but far more requested, making it much more difficult to obtain. TT Root Beer is easiest to acquire since there is less competition (and frequently acquired by first time purchasers, in fact). I don’t believe there’s a single TT watch in the Rolex catalogue that’s “harder” to obtain than its SS counterpart.

Since Rolex does not release production numbers, not sure what people are basing these speculations on. Seems like pulling numbers out of thin air.

Actually I specified SS only and while I have my preferences there is not a bad combination in that 2 X 2 matrix of dial and bracelet styles.

Should be visiting the AD next week to pick up the gift watch, will report back. I think I will take a modest gift to thank them for sourcing the gift, after all it is the season. Maybe bottle of wine or some high end chocolates, fully realize this is not going to result in a magical GMT appearance but I will make the gesture.

Most experiences and perspectives we share are anecdotal… but I think Madrid is spot on here.

This is how the game works now. I think you’re doing all that you can and I expect you’ll have a GMT on your wrist some time in 2022. Good luck, and enjoy the Cartier when it comes. They are making some great watches for sure!

You'd be fortunate if the GMT turned out to be a Root Beer. Once you see it in person, you'll realize the RB blows the batman and pepsi out of the water :)

Based on your near 20-year buying history, even though it may be on the modest side, I bet you get the call for a GMT in under 5 months. I also predict it will be for the BLNR on jubilee.

Good luck.
