Grey Dealer Question

I read on this forum that grey dealers sell watches that are typicly 1-2 years old and didnt sell at ADs, thats how they have a lower price. Does this mean that when say for example the new TT C Submariner comes out in september these grey dealers will not be selling them (at discounted rates)???

Not entirely accurate. I think grey dealers can sell cheaper than ADs because they have less overheads and perhaps are not subject to direct price controls by Rolex. Many are very reputable and trustworthy; however, with some there might be risks in which case the discount could be larger. If you buy from such a dealer, best to check his/her background thoroughly first (or ask TRF members for their opinion).

As for the new TT Sub, I'm sure that grey dealers will be selling them soon after ADs get them, and probably at decent, competitive prices.

Gray dealers often sell watches from foreign markets when the exchange rate is favourable . They can get any watch that way , even the latest models.

do gray dealers obliterate the serial numbers? i've heard rumors of sites like jomashop obliterating the serial number from their watches.

I have purchased/traded multiple watches. The serial numbers are not changed/modified. The only difference is that the warranty papers are different, and the home country/AD on the warranty might be China or Venezuela or some other country.

I haven't heard them do that before. But I have not heard good things about jomashop.

The honest answer is no!! But as grey dealers will tell you if you claim the watch was a gift how can they refuse to honour the warranty

Think you have been listening to rumours why would any legitimate grey dealer want to like you say scratch of the serial. The warranty is given by the Grey dealer and in many cases as good if not better than the Rolex one.But its been my experience that Rolex or any other watch has not needed any warranty work in the 2 year warranty period.Except for perhaps simple regulation that any good watchmaker could do.And after the say grey dealer warranty Rolex will quite happily take your money for routine service.

I have seen grey dealer websites with disclaimers "serial numbers may have been removed to protect our suppliers from manufacturer's price restrictions...." I'd never buy a watch with a removed serial number.

Legitimate Grey Dealers will NOT obliterate any serial numbers..

If somebody tells you that they do, do not buy from them...

A Rolex without a serial number is likely Black Market and the number is off for an illegal reason..

Is that perhaps only in the pictures the number has been removed? Because Rolex wouldn't know if it was sold through a grey dealer at all. Only that it was sold by an AD initially.

Would you buy a car from a gray dealer with its VIN / serial number removed ? Don't touch any Rolex or any other watch for that matter with a removed or altered serial number.
