SS Daytona or WG Daytona for Daily Wear

I was just lucky enough to get the call on a new Daytona 116519 LN. It's even better than I imagined in person.

I am considering selling my 116500LN White Daytona to keep the White Gold one. This will be my only Rolex, so I wanted to get your thoughts.

Sell the SS Daytona and have the WG Daytona as my daily wearer, or sell the White Gold and get on the list for another SS model? Can white gold withstand daily wear of a Dad with young kids, hunting, fishing, etc?

Would love your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

I’m struggling to make a similar decision. I really like the look of the 116519 WG plus ceramic bezel what’s not to love. My issue is it seems like a lot to pay for a little WG and a lot of rubber. Still evaluating between the 116509 and the 116519. I will be interested to hear the opinions of others.

Option 3: if you don’t want the white gold, don’t buy it.

SS Daytona or WG Daytona for Daily Wear

I own both.

Before acquiring either, I wanted the 1165000 soooo much more than the 519. I got the AD call for the 519 first and loved it but still lusted over the steel white dial 500. Once I got the 500 I have to admit, I was a bit underwhelmed going from WG to SS. The 519 feels much more substantial and special on the wrist than the 500.

I am not knocking the 500 at all, just stating my clear preference. I plan to keep both, but if I ever decide to move one, I bet it will be the 500 that goes.

Both are great though….

It's a shame you cannot keep both. Is your WG Daytona an OF or has the full WG bracelet? If it is the full WG bracelet I could understand why you would sell one but if OF then they are different to me. I have grown to really love the Daytona line. I still love the diver line the best but Daytonas are second favorite line.

WG will withstand whatever you throw at it.

I find that one can own multiple daytonas and it's not repetitive.

Buy it if you'd wear it. Leave it if you just want to sell it on the market!

Personally gold for me, but the weight can be an inconvenience to some

Both are incredible watches; you are fortunate. So, what to do. Well I'd say keep both, but if you cannot, I would keep the WG Oysterflex model, provided it's the one with the steel dial. The SS one will give you a good amount of money back, assuming you bought both at MSRP. Shame though because the SS Daytona is an amazing watch in its own right.

I‘ve had both and only kept the 116500LN.

The 116519LN is fantastic, but WG is much softer than SS so that it got scratches very quickly. The SS is much more robust in this sense.

Further on the Oysterflex is nice, but it‘s not as comfortable and does not feel as solid as the braclet. As good as it looks, it’s a strange combination to wear a precious metal watch and clasp with a relatively cheap strap.

If you can afford it, keep both. Two very different watches. But if it‘s your one and only everyday Rolex, keep the SS.

I would go for the WG. It feels much nicer on the wrist because of the weight. Yes it is a bit softer but i hardly notice any difference in scratches after one year of wearing my GMT comparing it to my 116500ln panda after one year.

I've had a WG 509 steel dial as my mostly daily wearer for about four years now. Once you feel that heft you never want to go back. Plus I love it's under-stated good looks.

Keep both.

If you are worry about wear, the WG will hold up plenty fine given the rubber strap and the ceramic bezel.

This is a tough one. I own the white and black 500s and love the WG on OF. I own a YM on OF and much prefer a PM on Oysterflex. However one thing to consider is Rolex hasn’t put a mini glidelock on the Daytona (yet) and in my experience it’s important for OF pieces.
I also find that there’s much less to scratch compared to PCLs if that bothers you.
Will be curious to hear what you decide…

I think the dials are much more interesting on the PM Daytonas vs the SS

ATM and TEPS... LISTEN TO JB. He hit the nail on the head. I have written about this exact same issue several times. I wore the WG for around 14 years, now I have a SS. Regret the switch. The 500 is pretty. But the WG is a whole new level WEARING EXPERIENCE.

I’d love to hear some more feedback from others on this, as an aspiring Daytona owner.
