If You Started You Collection Like THIS Would You Bother Doing THAT ?
I wanted to get into watches as a hobby but not sure what my 50+ year old eyes will do, so here's what I did....
I bought an Invicta Pro Diver a month ago. It's a Submariner all steel copy. I wore it and liked it so I wanted a real Sub.......and a GMT.......and a Daytona.. Gave the Invicta to one of my children. Couple weeks later bought a Sturling Chrono. It's a Daytona Platinum copy. Liked it. Gave it to another child. Couple weeks later bought a Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Chrono. It's a Daytona steel copy. It's being delivered today. Then yesterday I bought a Rolex Submariner black dial two-tone NIB. It's being delivered tomorrow. In the meantime I was looking at Tudor and liked the GMT root beer. My goal is leaving them to children, and enjoying them for a season. Given the trajectory of my buying spree, would you take a STEP BACK and buy a Tudor or would you just keep surging forward and be a 100% Rolex person and not fiddle with lesser brands? I am leaning towards doing both just because I am like that, but I like your thoughts |

Nothing wrong with experimenting, but I’d consider taking a breather and enjoying what you’ve bought

BUT.......what if you were allowed into a Rolex AD and told you could have anything you want, as many as you want, to build whatever collection you want.. WOULD you pick up a Tudor? I guess think of it like that....? |

In that case I would probably just stick with Rolex

If I thought of it like that, then no. But I would never need or want to buy an Invicta to gauge whether I would like a Rolex.

I would take that step back but use it to rest up a bit and down the road look at adding another Rolex that you really want to wear.

I know the feeling and the fun. I’ve semi been into watches for years and was into the Tag, Tudor, and other low end luxury watches. Got my first Rolex last year when I turned 70. It’s been full speed ahead since then. I’m fortunate to have met and become good friends with people who have been in the industry for years, store front and media sources. Gives me the ability to buy, wear and sale and go to another piece or two. I’ve got two that aren’t for sale, Batman and my first, Explorer MK 2. As they say, you can’t take the $$$ with you, so why not enjoy while you’re alive.

I'd skip the Tudor. (At least a dozen reasons but I don't want to start yet another thread on that topic.)

Go for it, it's about the journey and sounds like you are having fun. Re: Tudor, they are amazing watches, but if the ultimate goal is Rolex, Tudor will never scratch that itch. Take what you would have spent on a Tudor, go grey, and buy a GMT Master II, you'll have the watch next week. And then you'll want something new by Fall 2023 :)

That "root beer" GMT looks fine and I think a Rolex would scratch that itch. Strange how different the rose gold looks in person as opposed to in high res photos. I like the root beer look. |

Absolutely I would pick up a Tudor if I wanted a Tudor. This game isn’t scored, you don’t pick up more points for more expensive watches. The payoff is the joy you feel in acquiring a watch you really enjoy and bond with regardless of the hierarchical implications.

I have a varied selection that I have built over the past 40 years. Have gifted several to my children as well, but just purchased by first Tudor. Love it. Don't restrict your watches to one brand! |

I would suggest going the wait for ones purchased through AD route, especially now that you have a couple of nice watches. That will help curb your buying pace to something manageable.

Personally, I like to be very deliberate with my purchases. That isn't to be misconstrued with indecisive or slow though.
I don't buy anything for resale (if I did, I wouldn't buy European cars), but I also don't like wasting/losing money by buying things haphazardly or on impulse. As I said in your other thread, a $3k spread on a given watch between purchase locations can get me a nice 16" Macbook Pro. It could also get me a halfways decent resort vacation somewhere in Mexico. So using that particular example, while $3k may not be anything to some people, to me, I'd still be thinking of what that $3k (or any other specific dollar value) can get me elsewhere on other things/experiences in life. I pretty much always know in life exactly what I want, and I like to be very selective in getting exactly what I want without settling, especially when laying out large amounts of money. If that means I have to wait a bit whether it be for a watch, an ordered car, or whatever - I will do so. I also strongly believe less is more. The more iterations of something I have, the less I enjoy all of them. I stopped collecting anything years ago for this reason and found I am immensely happier when I have less things I own, especially things that require maintenance. This thread also reminds me of that scene in the Simpsons where Homer is being out by Bill Gates and Bill says, "I didn't get rich by writin' a lot of checks." I always keep that in mind when spending hard earned money that ultimately is going from my pocket into someone else's; they have to really have something compelling for me on offer in order for me to be willing to do that. |

Is the Tudor you are trying to buy is a copy one of the Rolex you want to buy or substitute because you couldn't buy the one as of now.
If so, I'd say pass. List the watches you are looking to buy in order would help ( at least helps me to chase ) |

Your money, your move friend! Hobbies cost money, just part of the deal. That said, I’d personally rather not lose any sum large or small by regretting a purchase regardless of whether I can afford it, as a matter of principle. Totally get diving into things though, I have owned lots of guitars, motorcycles, pocket knives, watches, etc over the years. As long as you’re having fun and doing it for yourself which in my opinion takes time - that is, you need enough experience to know what you actually like. I don’t care at all for “checking boxes”. All of the Land, Air, Sea “collections” which half the time are a 12 series green bezel Sub, 12 series Pepsi jubilee, and white dial 11 series Daytona lack any kind of personality. Flame me. |

Yes... The Tudor GMT is just a glimpse of a Rolex GMT Master II root beer to me.. My order is: 1. Submariner two tone (tomorrow) 2. GMT Pepsi 3. Submariner steel 3. GMT root beer 4. President All Rollie, so I guess there is my answer to me.... |

But if you buy a watch because it looks like the one you actually want. It doesn't last long, several months later you get itchy again -> that's my experience. If you are looking for all of them in new models that will be hard to get from AD. But if you okay with the previous/older models that just need some time to find the right price and condition |

So you purchased an Invicta, a Sturling and a Seiko...and you are worried about buying a Tudor as that is a lesser brand?

Take your time like others have mentioned. Buy what you like, have you considered older versions of the Tudor submariner? Some great looking watches and in my opinion have way more appeal than some of the newer models
