Watch advice! Which model to change to/ add
Hi there
I posted something similar in the past but I am still finding myself browsing endless Rolex “grey” dealer stock! I have a 2023 black sub date and have my name down at my AD for a mint green DJ41 jubilee fluted but they said could be around 3 years?! Do I keep the black sub date and try and wait patiently for the DJ? Or other options I have considered: Change my black sub to a bluesy TT which I have previously owned, I love the blue dial and how flashy it feels compared to black just feels a lot more premium, but once all scratched up will I feel the same? And is it 80s vibes etc?! Change black sub to a Pepsi jubilee or keep the sub and add Pepsi PX black sub for a bigger piece like a panda Daytona stainless, oysterflex Daytona, full YG bluesy, can’t think of other options I would like to add that the sometimes thought of “hot” pieces at one time, like Starbucks - I had been swayed to these in the past and I had to pay a premium going grey for it but decided it wasn’t for me after a few months So would appreciate everyone’s advice on what to do/ possibly change to etc Ideally I don’t want to keep changing and just have a watch/ watches I keep forever but also don’t have the budget to keep changing / adding I will also have to go grey market unless the AD DJ route Thanks again!! |

If you cannot make decision about a watch you want and it appears to be causing you this level of anxiety and analysis paralysis then maybe it's first to assess if you are wanting to get a watch for the right reasons? Because reading your posts it sounds like what you are engaging in here is compulsive behaviour in wanting to purchase things that by your own admission you are struggling to afford. From reading your other thread it seems this is a result of watching/reading a lot of watch influencers to the point where you are always chasing the next thing without ever really making your mind up https://www.rolexforums.com/showthre...3#post12968753
You have a 2023 black sub date which is a highly desired watch, why not just sit back and relax and enjoy it for a while? In my view Rolexes are too expensive to be engaging in compulsive behaviour that puts you at financial risk and it may even be an idea to change your focus for a while to microbrand watches that look amazing and also provide a hell of a lot of value at a much lower pricepoint. This will allow you to scratch your "new watch itch" without the related financial anxiety. You can find a big list of examples here... https://www.wristenthusiast.com/late...obrand-watches |

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps a little extreme saying anxiety and paralysis. After all this forum is to ask / discuss watch topics in a fair bit of detail I thought.
It’s not about affording it, I can “afford” or have the money to buy any Rolex in the catalogue, but I would not spend more than X amount on a watch just from my own principals. 2 watches maybe 3 absolute maximum is where I would be comfortable. I was just asking whether to add another model to black sub and keep it as the staple collector type piece as it’s so versatile Or to spend the equivalent money on a second watch plus my black sub to upgrade to one more expensive piece Not sure why people on this forum get caught up in people’s financial situations, it was a question about what watch to add or change to |

I also think you should just hold on to the black sub. It's a great watch and highly valued thus no need to consider the bluesy or anything else...IMO.

Keep the sub. You can literally DO EVERYTHING with that watch and it’s highly sought after (I’m currently on the waitlist for a no date sub and think about it every day). I’m shocked your AD said 3 year wait on a green dial DJ jubilee / fluted bezel. I would be shocked if it took half as long (especially if you purchased your sub from the same AD). I will say, every time I get my latest time piece I think I’m done then it’s a matter of time before another appeals to me. The good thing you have going is your sub is so versatile. The only thing you mentioned I see making sense is changing the black sub to a jubilee Pepsi if you could do it. I think it would give you what you are looking for and help you scratch the itch of getting a piece that stands out a little more than what you have and it definitely more of a talking point and you will still be able to keep the same black dial. Good luck!

The SS Submariner is a classic and iconic watch and could be the cornerstone of a serious collection. Sit tight for a bit and see where the market goes and give your AD an opportunity to get you the DJ you want. I don't think it will be anywhere near three years to fulfill your request. Stop flipping and add. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Thank you for the extra replies, the SS sub date I got grey not from AD so paid a premium for that. I had a black sub previously and after 2 years paid cash on top to change to the LV 12 series, but then changed back to a black sub a few months later. I think with the LV I got carried away with hype from here and instagram, when in real life I started to hate it!!
The Pepsi is a bit different I guess as it’s more of a classic but a big premium on grey market on that. I don’t car about investment pieces, just would be nice IF you ever had to sell in years and years you could almost break even from original purchase price, but would try to keep! The DJ in green I do really like just that long AD wait! The AD I registered with was a small family chain where I have no history I previously have had a bluesy from larger AD and they would not let me register for the DJ! Only pieces that I didn’t want |

Don’t do anything, wait for about 6 to 12 months when you are called for DJ41 (no way it’s going to be 3 years)
Then you go from there. You have a sub already, and time is on your side. Good things never come out from a haste

I like the idea of YG Bluesy, it would be a very different experience to the standard issue black sub

Wait and add the Pepsi or another DJ configuration. Maybe do a TT Datejust if you liked the bling of the bluesy. Would pair well with the black sub date.

I’m also down for a fluted DJ41 (Wimbledon, Mint or Blue) and a GMT to go with my Sub Date. I’m in a similar position except I’ve been given no indication of likely date. There are also a couple of other, non Rolex, watches I’d love to buy bad can commit in case I get the Rolex call as I don’t have the funds for all of them at once.
I have decided though that my Black Sub Date will stay and despite temptation, I will wait for the AD call. It’s frustrating waiting but I feel it’s the best option (as I don’t want to go grey for Rolex). |

The added bonus of patiently waiting for that call and then a few months later showing further interest in other watches was that my relationship with my AD really improved (it helps that they are also super nice and friendly to chat to) and now my future watch orders (currently Explorer 40mm and Yacht Master 40mm Blue) look to be very reasonable wait times. |

Despite your endless browsing you are probably exactly where you should be. Owning a sub date covers most bases, and you are on the list for a DJ41. The sub and the DJ41 is an amazing combo. You could realistically be done at that point.
If you prefer having 1 watch instead of 2... a daytona or a pepsi jubilee does the trick - more dressy than a sub, not as dressy as a DJ41.

It's a slippery slope, what you're thinking. It really is. You're looking at so many options that are just a never ending rabbit hole of what to get next.
Instead of thinking about what you can get for the sub, just wear and enjoy it. It's a great watch, the cornerstone of any Rolex collection, IMO, and trust me when I say, if you get rid of it, you're gonna want it back someday. As far as waiting patiently for the DJ, well, only you can decide that. In the meantime, just relax and enjoy one of the best watches of all time. |

Thank you for the extra replies, I agree that the black sub to me also feels like a must have and some people have it as their one and done too.
I have narrowed my options down to the below then!: Keep black sub and wait patiently for AD DJ41 call. IF I get the call, would you then ask for a black sub so that I could sell my grey market one and I would then have one from AD, nicer history/ provenance? Or not bother with that? One thing that bugs me with my sub is the bracelet is a bit squeaky sometimes but I bought it as a August 2023 unworn so guess it needs more wear. I have tried washing in soapy water to lubricate the bracelet too. Other option: Rather than black sub and DJ, have one nicer watch, like some have mentioned a pepsi jubilee perhaps? or I do also like a daytona panda/ daytona oysterflex - in particular a white dial with the yellow gold I guess its nicer to have 2 watches but the only thing I find is if I see a Daytona for example in the wild, I think to myself "I could have that" if I just have one watch, but not sure if its the answer or not? Still a lot of money on grey market, pepsi around £17k and daytona panda £25k ish, Oysterflex £29/30k |

What was the advice? Keep black sub?
I don’t mind keeping it as it is quite a classic There’s so many nice watches out there which makes it hard to ignore them! Slight update too - An AD has offered me a 2 tone bluesy |

Pass on the tt blue sub. Stay on classic all stainless sub date or all gold. Don’t go half way.

I went through something similar and posted on here for responses. I would definitely keep the Black sub. I have one and really enjoy wearing it. I would try to decide if you want the DJ or the Pepsi. Take some time to think about which one you prefer.

Keep the Sub.
Add you name on the list for a Pepsi. See what comes first: DJ or Pepsi. (Most likely the DJ). You’d have the Sub and the DJ for a while. When you eventually get the Pepsi, sell the Sub or the DJ if you must sell one.

Keep the Sub and add a DJ or GMT. In my earliest days of watch collecting, I had a tendency to trade and sell many of them, chasing after the next model...this was back before the current craze when we could buy and trade most any popular sports models between $2500-5000, so it wasn't quite the same $$ outlay as current days. If I had it to over again, I would have slowed down and tried to keep more things vs. constantly chasing another thing. There's something about building history and memories with your watch.

Thank you, I think yes keeping the black sub date needs to be the case as it is a good classic rolex watch. I could only put my name down for one piece at my AD, the DJ41 mint fluted jubilee I was advised 2-3 years, by which time the retail price will probably be the same as todays grey market price.
For a pepsi I think they were quoting 5+ years. I like the pepsi and DJ41 equally, but guess I should just be patient and try and wait for the DJ41 first I agree with building memories with watches etc, I had a 41mm black sub date previously and sold it plus cash for a 12 series LV, chasing the hype again, but the watch didnt sing to me and felt gaudy/ tacky sometimes with the green bezel, so went back to classic black and lost cash across the 2 deals! But back with a black sub again which must tell me something at least |
