Dufour or Roger Smith come to mind. Most aficionados do not consider Rolex haute horology which involves complete hand making and traditional hand decoration of the movement.

Charlie Brown Timex Weekender. $50 and would put Japanese Zaratsu finishing to shame.

An early Patek .. like in the museum in Geneva - like walking into Charlie’s Chocolate factory .. it’s freakin’ unreal !

For what Rolex does in their position in the market - nice looking mechanical watches that are crazy accurate and tough as nails - no one does it better. That’s why Rolex is a global obsession and nearly everyone respects Rolex, even if they don’t love the brand.

But Rolex does not do high horology, beautiful movement designs and fine finishing. If that matters to you (it does not matter to most) then there is a veritable universe of “better” watches than Rolex to explore. If you want to explore that world, I suggest first stop the “holy trinity” of Patek, AP, and Vacheron. Then go on to the next stop, A. Lange & Sohne. Then from there explore the more rarified world of independents, including H. Moser and Cie, Gronefeld, Moritz Grossmann, and MB&F. If you like this world, then follow the Revolution Watch folks and watch the videos from the Dubai Watch Fair on YouTube. There’s an endless world to explore above and beyond Rolex - but Rolex is foundational, and I’d never sell my Datejust.

"Best" and "costliest" are not comparable attributes.

As a long time "Wish I had a Rolex' , but can only afford a Breitling member, I've lusted after many watches in my life. I travel Internationally for a living, so I've toured many of the Swiss watchmakers factories.

Yes, there are more costly watches, but Rolex just seems to say it all. I'll be joining the Rolex owners club in 30 days or so....This Chronomat 44 just got shipped to a buyer.

I like the Rexhep Rexhepi Chronomètre Contemporain II though I don't know what's the cost. I saw someone attacking Akrivia with no factual evidence in WPS and I don't give a hoot about the rant.

I never got the ‘beautiful movement designs’ unless its a full open caseback you cant even see the movement unless you take it apart.

What is meant by finishing?

You nailed it. You do not get it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No lambo broken down on the side of the road is as beautiful as the tow truck that rescues it. The watch that keeps great time and doesn’t break is far more attractive (to me) than any hand finished haute horology that is less reliable or significantly less accurate. Poor time keeping is ugly no matter how much makeup it has on.

Open one up and compare it to a similar piece from a haute horology manufacture.
