Service for Platinum Daytona -- Send Directly to RSC or Go Thru AD?

So the time has come to send my Daytona in for service. Over the last number of months, it has gone from being spot on in time to losing about 30 seconds a day. I have bought a demagnetizer and used the iPhone app suggested here and it does not appear to be magnetized.

So, the question is: Do I send it in directly to RSC or use a local Rolex AD to send it in? IMO, these are the "issues."

If I send it in directly, I communicate directly with the RSC about what I want done and what I want to skip. But it doesn't seem very easy to ship a platinum Daytona and fully insure it. Insurance is limited to $50k, which may have changed recently, as I thought it was only $25k. So that may make my decision easier. The watch is only insured for $50k or so anyway.

If I send thru the local Rolex AD, there is a middleman potentially muddying up the communication and perhaps adding a layer of expense. But I don't have to worry about shipping it. I am currently in Naples FL and have visited both Rolex ADs here briefly but certainly do not have a relationship at either one.

Thoughts?

I could call Dallas RSC and ask the best way to handle it. I would be shocked if they didn't have a solution and I would prefer to be able to communicate with the RSC directly

I would ship it yourself to RSC. If the watch is scratched or damaged, it is hard to tell where it happened with an AD involved as middleman.

I see you’ve decided to deal direct.

I would’ve said use the local AD. It’s on them to handle everything and as far as I know, service cost is the same using an AD to coordinate service. If you’re dealing with the manager or better owner, I doubt very much there would be a screw up

If I had a platinum Daytona, I would plan ahead and drop the watch off at one of the three service centers the next time I happened to be in Dallas, Beverly Hills, or NYC. Might be an extra year earlier or later than I want but I’d feel better just handing it over to them.

Directly to the RSC. Registered Mail will give you up to $50K. No middle man to muck up the water.

Why not Dallas? Lots of folks here recommend them over others.

I have thought about this with my panda, I would fly to Dallas and personally drop off and pick up. I dont know that this is worth losing it. I am sure your collection is stacked and you can go something else until your schedule permits, but with $100K on the line idk is worth it thru the mail. I know that either Rolex prefers usps sending to them or sending back. (I am an accountant and work with a former 1RS agent on harder audits and back tax issues, he told me never to send anything through usps when sending to 1RS and to use only fedex and ups, that is from a former govt employee) Plus they dont make platona anymore. I have a hulk that stopped working a year ago and I have it sitting in a bank vault until I decide what to do. Take your time, no rush, platona is the best.

I did drop it off in Beverly Hills when there was an issue with the chrono. Like you described, I knew I'd be there and waited until the trip to drop it off in person. But I have no plans to be in Dallas or BH anytime soon, and probably not Manhattan either. I only have two nice watches, and the other one is in IL, so I will be without a good daily watch while this is gone. I didn't think to bring the old DJ with me to FL.

My understanding is that RSC will not accept mail-ins that aren't sent USPS Registered, so IRS or others preferences for Fedex/UPS don't really matter here.

Agree, I guess my point is that USPS loses everything and there is a reason DSW wants everything sent to him and sent to you via Fedex for example. When I called rolex dallas to determine how to send in my hulk I immediately backed off when they suggested usps. Anyways glad you got it to BH !

Most valuable property policy insurance is going to also cover the watch even when you ship it. I have my Patak Philippe nautilus 5711 insured for $120,000 and through USAA. Before shipping the watch to HSWA in New York for service, I verified that my policy didn’t fact cover the watch in shipping so long as I was not operating a business and I was shipping the watch for personal use, it was 100% covered no questions asked. As a result I was able to buy a UPS overnight shipping label with no insurance whatsoever and I sent my note was that way now it was fully covered by USA. My annual premium for $120,000 worth of insurance is less than what any insurance for just one shipment would’ve cost me through UPS to send it for just one day. My recommendation is to take out a personal property policy on your watch and just ensure that it’s covered for personal shipping purposes and you’ll be fine.

I always have AD send it and ask them to send to Dallas. ADs send so many watches to RSC that it’s routine for them and I’ve never had a problem. Having to pack it, track it and worry isn’t something I want to deal with.

Exactly this. Let them be responsible for it.

I typically advise to go directly to the RSC but I just had a YG Sky-Dweller serviced and a dial change. I sent it through my AD and had an issue with RSC not using the right color disc for the month. After specific conversations with the SA that handles service. Not sure if it was a miscommunication or RSC just made a mistake. Back it went and it was corrected and back to me in record time. For a high value piece I would probably just give it to my AD and go on with it.
