Pop's Elgin RR watch
This past week while visiting my 91 year old aunt, my mother's last living sister, she gave me one of my grandfather's railroad watches.
Pop had a 50 year career on the old Virginian RR. This watch is an Elgin made in 1874 according to a serial number check of the Elgin data base. Pop was born in 1884 and started working on the Virginian RR in 1898 at age 14. My aunt has two other watches he used, one dating from 1886 and the other from 1923. This watch winds with the key that is shown in the photo and when I turned it a few turns it came to life for the first time in probably over 50 years. I just thought that fellow watch enthusiasts would enjoy seeing this watch. Needless to say, for me, this watch is treasure! Cheers, Bill P. |
