At first when they announced a 41mm i had the same thought. But after owning the 116610LV, 114060, 124060 and 126610LV and wearing all these watches i felt the comfort of the new case much more to me liking than the boxy, thick case of the 40mm. Boxy looks nicer but when wearing it felt like something is wrong with this watch, maybe the 40mm is better on a 7.5inches or more wrist.
Only downside of the 41mm is the longer clasp but it is not a deal breaker to me.

The best-looking current Rolexes are the OP range, with their slimmer, more elegant lugs.

All IMO.
Spot on. I almost pulled the trigger on an OP , just did not like the bracelet taper , but the watch in the most part was flawless in proportions and design. I was after a watch to wear on steel , so the bracelet was important.

It’s not longer - see post 54.

This is an excellent point

IMHO Rolex straddles the line here nicely. The newer ceramic references added some size and heft but at least they kept the same thickness more or less.

I’m sort of on the fence when it comes to heft. There are some days when I just prefer wearing something a little lighter feeling on the wrist, but too light also isn’t quite right for me. There’s a fine line for me, but I sort of top out at about where the Submariner weighs in at

I would prefer more taper on the 12x. Honestly my perfect sub would be 2-3 mm slimmer

I definitely prefer the vintage Submariner cases to all of the modern maxi case variants. However I much prefer the build quality and in particular the bracelets of the modern Submariners. Where does this leave me? I sold my Hulk after 10 years and I have no plans to replace it with anything Rolex currently makes. Vintage? Maybe if I find the right one.

Sounds like you need a 16610 and put a 97200 bracelet on it. Best of both worlds.

Have we not settled this yet?

No, nobody else thinks "Rolex ruined the sub".

ok so just an update on my views. I put the watch in the safety deposit box and didnt use it for a couple of months. Took it out again around a month ago and have been wearing it daily again.

And I now think the proportions and case size and fit etc are just perfect. I think I just wore it as daily for a few months and got bored so was venting a bit :D

This is also a lesson for me to put the watch aside for sometime before making any rash decisions.

does anyone else think rolex ruined the sub?

I unapologetically love modern Rolex…with the exception of six digit Subs. The 12 is too big and the 11 is too boxy and poor pro-proportioned.

When it comes to the Sub I only like 5 digits or fewer.

I don’t think the modern ones are ruined, just not as good as the older ones.

Winner winner ...chicken dinner!!

I have owned a few six digit subs and this five digit 16610LV looks and feels the best on my wrist.

12>11 in almost all respects. Movement is the elephant in the room.

I have the 126610LV for almost a year now. For me the the color of the bezel (mk2) has been the main attraction but with time i have started to focus bit more on the other elements of the watch (like case and bracelet).

I feel the case on the new feel bit too vintage inspired. I for one dont mind bit more modern styling. And I also think I prefer the 20mm bracelet of the last model.

Does anyone else think the same?

I have the Sub 116618LB & I like it, the only criticism I would have of the new 12 series is the change of colour text on the dial, i much prefer the gold text as opposed to the white, but overall I like the changes that were made

I’ve owned both the 114060 and the 124060 as well as the 116610LV and 126610LV. This idea that the previous generation was an abomination is complete nonsense. If you saw both on wrists in public, without quickly looking at 6 o’clock for the crown between “Swiss” and “Made,” you’d have a hard time telling the difference.

I do prefer the 12 series with the exception of the fact that I think the clasp is a hair too big (wide might be a better description). Also anyone thinking that the 12 series Submariners are somehow perfected and are the “final form,” get a grip. Rolex will tweak something else the next time they do them over. Even the cases on the 11 series and 12 GMTs are very subtly different. Then when the 13 series Subs come out, everyone will go on and on about how they are way better looking than the 12 series.

Rolex is, at this point, just searching for little things to tweak because a new movement alone isn’t enough to get anyone excited. First it was lug holes, then it was an engraved rehaut, then it was the maxi dial followed by the maxi case, then it was a slimming of the lugs and widening of the bracelet.
