Thoughts on 3940 vs 5146
I am looking to buy either a used 3940 or a used/new 5146. I just wanted to hear your comments on what you would prefer and why. Does the 3940 wear larger than a typical 37mm? I am scared off a little because I have a 36mm day-date that I no longer wear due to its smaller size.
Thanks for you advice in advance! |

If a 36mm DD is too small then you wont like the 3940 however, I owned one and loved it. As for the 5146, personally I do not care for it.

5146 would be my choice , 3940 is a nice watch but it’s size would stop me from enjoying. 5146 is a reference that is still in the catalogue, love its lumen that the 3940 lacks plus I am sucker for power reserve

I think the 3940 is the perfect dress watch, but it will not wear bigger than your 36mm day date. I go between 36mm (3940g) and 42mm (5070g). For me, I get used to the new size (going up or down) after the second day of wear.

my vote-- 5146- classic, perfect size, the power reserve is always a plus, the lume is special as well. Cream dial or slate grey- both beautiful. Wonderful AC

I too think the 3940 is kinda perfect...I love it. The dial is so nicely balanced and while smaller I find it the clearest and easiest to read of the PC. That being said, I also love my DD36. |

I'd be totally fine w the 36mm as I am happily wearing a 34mm 3998P and haven't gone beyond 40mm w my 6 5/8 " wrist, but as he said, if you don't wear a 36mm DD you prob won't like the 3940. The 5146 does nothing for me. |

I'm in the minority here, the 5146 always looked upside-down to me with the Patek logo on the bottom, can't get beyond that. When I sold my 5035R, that's why I jumped over the 5146 and landed on the 5205R instead. In addition, the general aesthetics of the 5146 never did much for me. Again, I realize I'm in the minority.
So, I vote for the 3940...but the size is something to consider, might be on the cusp of being perhaps just a tad too small. Try it on to see whether the size works for you, if so, 3940 is a classic for sure. |
