Discount amount of taxes?
Is an AD likely to at least discount for the amount of taxes, particularly if paying retail price up front to order the watch?

Depends on the watch... in my experience I get the tax taken off when I pay cash up front.

It is very, very, very much a sellers market right now. Meaning Rolex ADs have many more people ready and willing to pay whatever the price is to purchase a watch.
To avoid sales tax, move to Montana. But you will still have to wait for any popular watch. Do you have experience building igloos? |

Discounting the taxes is a X% discount. No reason for a US dealer to do that these days.

There has been two time where my AD was willing to ship out of state and that too for two DJ41 have bought from him in the last 18 months.
Irrespective of shipping out of state, the buying is still responsible for paying taxes in their own State (States where sales tax is applicable). That is how I understand the sales tax laws in the US. |

It used to be pretty easy to get the tax waived at my AD. In fact they had an annual watch fair during which they advertised no tax. Not any longer. No discounts.

They should forfeit their spot in line and wait for a steel Daytona at 20% off like they used to be |

Really depends on a lot of different factors. I've managed this in some cases, but with others, no such luck.

I personally hope that paying MSRP is here to stay. How and why did we ever get the notion that we should haggle for watches? Other than cars and houses what else do you regularly haggle over?

Depends on the watch and tax rate.
Rolex is on fire right now - unless it's a non sports PM piece I don't see it happening.

Here in Canada, as of late 2019, it was a hard no from several ADs I approached looking at SS DJ41s....

Haggling is basically anytime you use a coupon code or buy something on a promotion price.
I’d never pay msrp for certain things, home appliances, tv, computer, laptop, vet medication, etc. My Rolex is a personal choice, not a necessity in life. It’s a little different since the market is crazy today, but I received a 10% discount on my SubC, once market conditions change and normalize (If they ever do), there’s no reason why I shouldn’t be able to achieve that same discount. It might take some leg work, but that’s why I enjoy the hunt |

If possible to ship out of state you can avoid paying tax.

The market is crazy now... Not a chance. It is bizarre world when you find your self thanking someone for selling you an item at retail + tax, but that is where I found myself last week. Has me rethinking buying Rolex for a long while until the market cools.
Whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. |

I mean come on... do you really think I am referring to any of those models especially SS with the current market?! I am referring to the two tones and full PM pieces people don't even bother to ask if there is any wiggle room.

The notion to haggle was given when we established a free market economy. Nothing wrong with paying MSRP but if you can save money why not?! Crazy how you will haggle over a $20k+ car but all of a sudden we should stop when we are talking about a 30k luxury wristwatch with way less moving parts.

I tried to buy a Rolex Smurf from the Rolex Boutique in Vancouver BC (I live in Alberta).. In BC they pay a federal tax and a provincial tax (12%) and Alberta only pays a 5% federal tax. They refused to sell it to me for full price + just federal tax (even just ship it to me).
Was really unfortunate as no other Rolex AD or boutique in Canada had a Smurf in stock.. I ended up buying a Vacheron instead - but definitely a loss for Rolex on a WG piece at full price all because they wanted me to pay tax on something I technically am not subject to because they wouldn't ship it.
