I’m surprised this isn’t talked about more. I found out about it a few months back when someone mentioned it in a YouTube comment. I put my sub up to my ear and sure enough, ringing away!

I went on to tell some fellow collectors about it and they were blown away by it.

I have noticed some ring a little louder and more defined than others too.

I think of my Rolex watches as little orchestras now, playing away for my enjoyment. ;-)

Got it!
Yes most all movements are constructed from the same basic materials today and all high beat movements basically sound the same. The sound basically comes from the resonance in the watch case, now the older slow beat Rolex movements used to beat at 18000BPH,19800BPH slower tick but a bit louder.

Yeah, I guess you could say it’s subtle. Depends on your hearing. I can hear mine pretty clearly when I hold it up to my ear, and better if not holding the case, just gripping the bracelet. But others can hear theirs on the night stand or even through a pillow, so either the sound level varies, or some people have way better hearing than others!

I just put the 2824-2 from ETA in my ear and do not make that sound. The 3235 yes, why?

Would expect the case size, resonance of case, and mainly case thickness.

Not quite, there is one major differentiating factor being the rotor system. I would think that the rotor axle system (with no ball bearings) transmits and reverberates the noise from the pallet fork better than a ball bearing rotor system. It could function almost as a tuning fork, amplifying the noise from the movement.

Another thing is the balance bridge and how it is screwed down on two sides. I would think this transmits the vibrations from the pallet fork over to the rest of the movement and case better than a balance cock with only a single point of contact.
