Service Dials.
Apart from, say, a bright, fresh, lume on a 50 year old watch. How would the 'Ordinary Joe', identify, with any confidence, a 'Service Dial' on a second hand watch?

Others will hopefully write more. I think there are a few ways to tell.
1) if the lume doesn't match from the dial to the hands 2) if the marker on the bottom is unexpected* * An example would be a 1980s submariner. You might expect this watch to ship with a tritium dial (T Swiss Made T). Rolex doesn't use those anymore. The dial they replace it with will look 99% correct, but the bottom might say "Swiss Made" |

I'm totally ignorant in these matters, and was always fascinated by the ability of some members to assess a dial and sometimes hands, as 'Service'. Often managing this from, average photographs. "I came here to learn, and have fun". |

A maxi dial on a watch with lug holes (or prior to 2002/3)

This thread is a great place to start if you have an interest in vintage. This is the "Vintage Rolex Buyer's Guidance to determine the originality of your watch."
