What a great thread.

About 43 years ago, my mam bought me a digital Seiko. I think I was 14. I'm sure that it was about £70 at the time. It was only years later that I understood what a stretch this must have been for a single parent who at one stage took a second job to pay the rent and put food on the table. I still have this watch and it still works and keeps good time.

I started work in 1979 and one of the first things I bought myself was another Seiko. It's "gold" with a digital readout at the bottom and and an analogy second time zone function at the top. I still have the watch but it is starting to have problems with the digital display. Unfortunately Seiko in the UK cannot repair it now.

I wore these watches for many years until I got married. My wife and I decided to buy a pair of watches to celebrate the occasion and I got a TAG 2000 chronograph. I worn this watch for years with one of the Seikos being used when the TAG was serviced. I still have this watch and it still keeps good time. It is still worn regularly.

My mam died in 2009 and I decided to buy a nice watch with some money she left me. I went in to look at an Apollo 11 40th anniversary Speedmaster but could not make up my mind about it. Whilst I was there I was offered a Submariner to try on, (remember when that could happen!) and I ended up buying that and not taking it off for over a year!

I've bought a few watches since, and I still look at Apollo 11 40th anniversary Speedmasters. With the exception of a moon watch which I just did not get on with, I keep watches I buy and I have good memories of them all, but I would sacrifice them all before I would get rid of my original Seiko. Every time I look at that first Seiko I remember my mam and the effort she made to buy me it. I will never forget my mam and I will never get rid of the watch she bought me.

That's the solid gold, beautiful 1973 Omega Genève Automatic I inherited from my father. I wore it daily for 20 years, apart from the many times Omega had to repair it because I´d banged or dropped it...I´m a clumsy guy, and the Omega is rather delicate. That's what pushed into buying my 14060 new, a really tough watch. I still have my dad´s Omega, and would NEVER sell it! In fact, I've been wearing it around my apartment during Germany´s lockdown (while my Sub sulks!) and it keeps excellent time...roughly 10 to 12 secs fast per day! For such an old watch (last serviced in 1996) that is, I think, fantastic, good enough for me! Here's a quick crappy photo, and that's the original box too:

Thanks for the post, OP. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your parents to such a terrible illness. You went with a solid choice, it's a beautiful watch and you will likely never have to worry about being on the hype train. I'm glad that you have a piece that gives you happiness and reminds you of your mother.

I picked up a 14060M to mark a career milestone, as well as my first Rolex. I wanted a polar, but I held out to see what the new model would look like and was disappointed when I saw it. The 5 digit was the girl that got away and took me years to acquire one. Both models have an emotional attachment to me, that I make sure to build memories with. I'm not emotional with my other pieces, for the most part. Those two are my "never sell" pieces.

I agree, a lot of people on here as of late are more transactional with this hobby. It's disappointing to me. Then again, it takes all kinds to make a world.

My most sentimental piece is my sub date. Wore it to my first Ironman. All 140.6 miles. AD came through with getting it for me days before I left for Lake Placid. It's a very special watch. My daily beater, and each ding is a tattoo reminding me of a memory. Ironically, the first ding wasn't from the Ironman but was from my *tattoo* artist trying it on and going a little too crazy with it... memory of him :)

My most sentimental watch is my Tissot Visodate - it was my first real watch and a treasured gift from my parents. Never leaving the collection and it's on my wrist plenty as a dressier watch. Secondly, I also have a cheap quartz (Solo) - but it is a gift from my grandmother from way back when I was a child and I shall always keep it as well.

Graduation date would be in May 2020. Plane ticket and hotel accommodation were already booked as early as August of last year. We engraved the watch caseback with his initials and graduation date. And my wife and I were definitely looking forward to seeing him soon.

Not until this Covid-19 pandemic happened which necessitated changes in plan such as cancellation of our visit and possibly cancellation of graduation day. But we are still hoping that graduation day will be postponed. In addition, we were in a tight dilemma of whether to ask him to come home or for him to stay in his apartment near the school. We decided on the latter as the airport is not definitely a safe place to be in and the long flight hours and possible quarantine activity that may be undertaken when he returns home.

So there you go, a sentimental gift watch that is still an ongoing work in progress. Hopeful yet scared, optimistic yet cautious. A “crown” for every achievement indeed.

My condolences for the loss of your parents OP. Thanks for sharing a beautiful story. It’s funny how to some a Rolex is just a watch or just an investment, and to some it is a lot more than that.

I feel I will really enjoy this thread.
