The £210000 Rolex.Ref. 6263/6265

The highest auction price ever paid for a Rolex,And the bracelet doesn't even have solid end links, and only a trusty ETA Valjoux engine. We all have our own limit, and to pay that much for a watch (even if it does have an lurid red dial which is thankfully 'rare'). Is just so way past my limit, of what constitutes a reasonably acceptable amount of insaneness. That I almost feel smug and pious knowing I will never reach such heights of excess extravaence

Peter, IMO that is the holy grail of Daytonas and on a par with the very first Yachtmaster Daytona. I love the red dial. It really stands apart from the chaffe.

I love it but at that price it's stupidly expensive for only a 'wrist watch'.

Yes its the Holy grail of Dayton's,and think the dial might take some getting
used to.Myself prefer the one with the white sub-dials,but the more I look the
more I like both.Myself much prefer the dial of the 6263/65, now todays auto
116520 Daytona with the 6263/65 dial that would be a holy grail Daytona.

"...it's stupidly expensive for only a 'wrist watch'."

Yes, if were only a 'wrist watch'.

This is one of those exceedingly rare cases where a watch can be an 'investment'.

This one won't be worn, but rather prepped, insured and locked away in a temperature and humidity controlled vault for a couple'a years when we'll see it pop up again at Christies, Sotheby's, or Antiquorum with an anticipated hammer price of half a million dollars or so.

There's a good number of Pateks, VC's, Cartiers, and some Rolexes that show up every few years that've appreciated by 50 - 100% in just a couple of years.

Of course I was being facetious. I well know that's an investment piece and remember the last time it got brought out of the vault. I think it went for something like US$250,000. Crazy!

I appreciate that this watch may be useful as an investement, but to my eyes it looks truely aweful, and were it not for its investment value, i wouldnt even spend £2100, let alone £200,000 on it. Each to his own i suppose. For those that want the look, but not the $$$, omega have released a very similar red dialled schumacher special limited edition

Hey tosser,

You guys had already said it all. I had merely to read it and enjoy it....nothing more I could add so I merely acknowledged it.

Yes, Peter, we think those days were cheap, but only when we compare them with today's prices. Remember of course, that salaries were much lower then, the local currency had much more value then, so those prices would be pretty steep by earning standards prevailing at the time.

I remember in 1976 when I'd gone to London for a holiday, I could eat a superb English breakfast for ONE POUND and that included...2 eggs, strip of bacon, 2 sausages, toast butter and tea. How's all that for a mere quid? What would you get for a quid today? Bugger all!!
