Authentic Rolex ??

HI Guys:

I don't think I need to attach a picture to get an accurate answer to this question:

Did they ever make a Rolex 18k YG with non-fluted dial, and Oyster bracelet?

The reason I ask, is because a friend of mine asked me if his watch was a "real Rolex" and I told him I would evaluate it for him.

What I found was a watch with authentic looking bracelet markings, BUT there was no serial number on the case under the bracelet, and no model number on the other side of the case.

I was of the opinion that all Rolexes had serial number and model number engraved in the case, that you could only see after bracelet removal. . .

Is that true ??

Authentic Rolex ??

Does the watch has engraved rehaut? There are transitional pieces with both s/n under the lugs and engraved rehaut but on modern pieces tipically have either or both

Without photos I can say yes, Rolex did make Gold watches with oyster bracelets and smooth bezels. The oyster perpetual may have been 14k and may have been gold plated but was available with oyster bracelet and smooth bezel.

Doesn't look good to me.

I especially don't like the non-fluted dial.

Here are the pix

Stainless pins that hold bracelet to lugs

Appears to me some kind of metal for threads under crown - not "gold"

At bottom of dial, "Swiss" and "Made" appear to be too far away from the 6 marker.

Bracelet very difficult to re-install. Reminds me of Chinese fitting (maybe HK).

On my other 16 Rolex, bracelet comes off, goes on, no problem (yes I have the tool).

Stem doesn't turn too smoothly and feels a little loose, after unscrewing.

My amateur evaluation...

see pix plz

Yeah Chris the fonts don't look right to me either. I don't have the tool to open the case and look inside. Seems like a nice build, BUT doesn't seem "swiss made" to me.

Did your friend get it from a Grandfather? Just look at the weight, I’m sure a real gold DD weights much more than that?

FAKE....

You should have just asked your friend how he acquired it...That usually makes it easy to determine....

I told my friend not to comment on where he got it so I could be unbiased in the eval.

My 18238 weighs 134g.

I also noticed no markings on the underside of the lugs.

I would hate to tell him its crap, when it might just be an older version. The actual "in person" gold color is slightly more "rose" than yellow in the right light, but again, Rolex has formulated and re-formulated their gold mixtures over time, so I cannot tell just from the color of the gold itself.

I simply figured that the lack of a serial number under the bracelet pretty much was the dead giveaway, since I have seen models from 1964 on with serial number between the lugs, under the bracelet.

The clasp on an 8385 bracelet should be rose gold for strength.
