Should I be nervous about the OP clasp?
Hi guys,
Picked up my first non-“professional” Rolex this weekend and it’s an oyster perpetual. I’m nervous that the clasp doesn’t lock like the submariner and gmt does. Should I be worried about the watch clasp becoming loose and falling off my wrist? Has this happened before? I’m sure Rolex has put countless hours of r&d into the clasp to ensure it doesn’t, but I need someone reassurance haha. Let me know your thoughts. |

DJ has a similar clasp (with polished center and different Rolex logo) and also doesn't lock. At times I feel like my GMT clasp is easier to open by accident because if the lock catches on something it can open without me noticing. Then the clasp lever itself is weaker than DJ and could also open without me noticing as well. (It's probably irrational. Highly unlikely that two systems would fail me, even if individually neither are very strong.) With how tight the DJ clasp is, I feel like if it catches on something, I will feel way before the pressure is enough to open the clasp.

I have one on my 116900 Air-King and I have grown to like it. It is very comfortable and solid. No worries for me.

You shouldn’t be concerned at all. I wear my OP39 3-4 times a week and have never had a problem.

I’ve had a Datejust with that clasp for almost 8 years and it has never popped open. You’re good. Your watch is awesome, by the way.

I had the same concerns when I picked up my first Rolex which was a Datejust II. I thought all high end watches had the extra safety clasp. I didn't realize that feature was mainly for their sports watches. Have no fear, I have never had a single issue with my DJ clasp. It is rock solid

In all the years I’ve been here, I’ve not recalled anyone post about that happening.
You are more likely to have a screw back out and have the bracelet and watch fall apart than the claps coming undone randomly. Although I will say the use of thread locker especially on new watches makes this a pretty rare event too |

My first Rolex was a DateJust, I had 13 years old, yes my father love me so much, and if at that age, with the old clasp model, with the disasters I did with that watch, I never had problems, I don't think you have to worry at all.
