Rolex 1603 Crown Question

Hi guys, me again :-) just had another question regarding my datejust. Anyone know if there’s a reason why the crown would not be sitting flush against the case? I’ve seen other people have the same or similar issue, but I’m not sure if it’s something I should be worried about. It’s as tight as it’ll go and it’s keeping perfect time. Thanks!

The thread is dirty or worn out. Try dental floss in the grooves to clean it

Does the Rolex crown on your winding cap line up perfectly with the five points on top? If not that may be part of the problem.

It doesn’t. I’ve attached a picture of the crown fully tightens below.

Funny. Richard is just joking. Others have asked in the past if the crown should be oriented straight up when it is screwed down. It does not, this is just a joke.

FWIW, I have a 1680 that was recently serviced by Phillip Ridley and when I got it back, I noticed there were some threads visible on the stem and that the crown does not sit flush with the case when fully screwed down. Phillip looked at the watch again and assured me this is normal and watertight. I'm curious to see what others have to say.

Yes, just joking around. So many of these questions could be answered with a simple search which never happens for some reason.

The distance between crown and case tells you your seals are still functioning. In fact, if the crown is touching the case it means your gaskets are crushed and should be replaced. In short, distance is normal.

The crown should never sit flush against the case.

If it does, it will not seal because the gasket is inside the top of the crown. It seals against the top of the tube.
