The J in DateJust
Does the second pic here look right with the unusual J in DateJust? I have only seen them with the crossed J like in the first pic. I know there are all kinds of font variations with Rolex, but this second one (from around 1967) looks like it might have rubbed off somehow.
Thanks, Adam |

Could just be the photo (and my phone) but the R O L (in Rolex of course) all look funky to me in Adams 2nd photo.
Edit: and the E in DJ

Here's the whole dial. It's a 1603.

Seen a few more like it online in the last few days, so probably just another dial variation. Perhaps one day it will become the highly desirable, very rare 'straight J' !

You need to give it a catchy nickname first.

I am bringing this post back from the dead. I have recently seen some pictures online of Datejust 1601's with the J in Datejust missing the Horizontal line like the in this original post. Can anyone confirm if this J is correct for a mid-1970's pie pan dial original to a 1601, or are these replacement or aftermarket dials?

I'd forgotten about this thread. I eventually bought the watch shown in post #4 with full set box/papers/tags, etc (Q4 1966) and gave it to me wife, who still loves it. Below is a clearer shot of the dial only, as well as a pic of the latest model I found back then with the "straight J", from Q4, 1970, which many will recognise as being from HQ Milton.

Not really, I only know they are a lot less common than, for example, the HQ Milton one above.

There's a bit of info here, though not for the 1601 exactly: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=702179
edit: at second glance that thread is pretty useless, sorry.

Returning to the original Q re J with no crossing
I have a 1603 with this type of dial, caseback 1 69, 2.15x serial, so have looked into this These dials crop up from late 60s to early 70s mainly, on 1601 and 1603. Searching HQMilton archives and other sources will turn up many examples Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Hey Adam
Here’s my all original 1601 circa 1970 dial for comparison….are you asking for authenticy? As Padi might say…another one of the many various font changes over the years by Rolex |
