New arrival 5513 Maxi dial

I picked this up at a small auction over the weekend on the basis of the usual poor photos. There was also a gilt-dial 5513 in the auction that I was really tempted by, but the photos showed some big white spots and I just couldn't tell if they were loose, on the crystal, or on the dial, so I didn't end up bidding on it. Maybe someone here picked up something great if they were braver than me.

I haven't had one of these Maxi dial examples before and I've noticed that many forum members really appreciate them, so I've been curious to have one. The lume plots have yellowed, which appeals to me, though TBH the color is a bit more uneven than I expected from the photos. Pretty nice insert. The chamfers aren't super sharp but overall the case is decent, with solid lugs and good crown guards. No watchmaker's marks inside, but it's running well, and I'm happy to see that there isn't much corrosion, since there were no photos of the inside. Only 17j unfortunately. It came with a nice later 11-link 93150. Overall, I'm pleased to have it and I think I'll enjoy wearing it.

Haha, if you think this one is a beater I should show you the case on my pre-Comex.

Congratulations Dan, looks like a great one to wear and enjoy

I’ve often wondered if there’s a way to quantify the difference in plot sizes from this to the “standard” variants …10%-20- larger or what have you…

I could try to take a good side-by-side photo and measure.

That would be appreciated

If nothing else it would satisfy my curiosity. I've just never seen a good direct comparison.

Thank you in advance!

To account for potential non-linearity in the photo, I used the region of the scale above each watch to calibrate separately for each dial. I also averaged over the size of at least three lume plots on each dial, since they are not exactly the same. My inner scientist is a little uncomfortable with using three significant figures for these values, so be aware that there is some uncertainty built into these values. So the Maxi1 dial is roughly 10% larger than the meters-first and probably slightly larger than the pre-Comex. These are the only three Rolex Subs that I have on hand. In retrospect, I should have included my Tudor ... oh well.

Approximate lume plot diameter:

Meters-first: 2.06mm
Pre-Comex: 2.19mm
Maxi Mk1: 2.26mm

(Very) nice 'triptyque'.

Very nice!

Dan,

That gilt 5513 you mentioned had lume loss on a fair number of the plots. For the price that was paid, think it was better that you passed!

Cheers!
Frank

Yes, my instincts were that it would be risky. Thanks for the affirmation, Frank.

Always wanted to do this myself and was afraid parallax would trick me.

Thanks Dan

Thanks Dan
There definitely is some parallax, I saw that when converting between pixels and mm using the scale (the conversion varied by about 3% across the photo). But hopefully I was able to compensate using the scale to a first approximation.

Well, if the difference in lume plot size is less than 10%, an error of 3% could be pretty significant. TBH, we have this issue even in the field of view of high quality microscope objectives, and we use a standard grid to do local calibration.

This is great, Dan. Thanks for doing this. I can really see the difference between the maxi dial and the meters-first dial.
