My First Rolex - Datejust 16030 Tapestry Dial

Just received my first "keeper" Rolex. (I did previously have a 16030 that I flipped after a week, and currently have a Tudor BB 58, but this is my first real, "I'm gonna keep this one" Rolex.) Got it from Ponycar350 in the Classifieds and it's beyond my expectations! Thanks, Jared!

This has a slate grey tapestry dial and is in seriously beautiful, near mint condition. I couldn't be happier. I also have looked more closely at the open 6 and 9 and think it may be the original date wheel. I had posted some questions about it a week ago and couldn't tell for sure given the grainy photos. But I've taken some fresh ones, so if any of you have an educated opinion on this, please let me know. Either way, I'm pretty excited.

Very nice DateJust. This is a classic reference and a great piece to add to any collection. That Tapestry dial looks killer, too and gotta love the open 6 and 9s on the date wheel. The 16030 was my first Rolex.

Congrats on the acquisition! Mine says hello.

Looks great! And that date wheel looks original and correct to my eyes. What's the beginning of the serial number?

Congrats!

It's an "R" serial number, so according to Bob's website, it dates to 1988. The bracelet is an "L" serial number which apparently dates it to 1987. Would that be common (a 1 year gap) or does that imply that the bracelet and head were not together from the factory? Thanks again for the advice and info!

Edit: I've looked around and apparently the R serial number can be between mid 1987 through 1988, so it's likely the bracelet and head were together from the beginning. Or at least not unlikely. :)

Congratulations, it looks great! I think the gray is the best color among the tapestry dials.

(And I say this as someone whose only tapestry dial is … well, it’s not gray)

Lovely 'corrugated (many of us called it in 80s in uk) tapestry' dial and grey is a fine version.

Nice Datejust! Enjoy.

I have bought and sold a lot with Jared. He is A+. Just picked up a watch from him last night.

Really nice watch. I love the tapestry dial in grey, as well as white. Both are unique.
