Here's a supposedly "Comex" Submariner with absolutely no link to Comex as far as I can see. Or am I missing something here.

The backstory on this watch is correct. Early Comex 5513s didn't have the logo dial, and the presence of the HEV value is right.

However, there are several things on this watch that appear questionable. Tritium looks strange and case looks odd, although the photos aren't great. Also, no Comex on the case back would be unusual.

Without any supporting documentation this is just a 5513 with a helium escape valve (HEV) fitted, and, as has been pointed out above, has no verifiable link to Comex.

There are many people skilled enough to take a relatively cheap 5513 and modify it to fit an HEV. There are also many other people devious enough to have this work carried out and then claim that it is a Comex Submariner.

The financial benefits of this can be substantial:

Rolex 5513 -about $12000 to $13000
Case modifications -about $250 to $500
HEV parts - about $250 to $500

Selling price of a fake Comex - about $45000

Profit - about $31000 to $32500

I'm not saying that this is what has happened here, as there is no information to say that this is not a genuine Comex watch, but I know that this can be done by replica watch enthusiasts for personal pleasure, and so presumably could also be done by those wishing to deceive buyers for profit.

When selling it and questioned about the lack of a Comex case back (or a dial change, or the lack of papers), all you have to say is that the previous owner kept them for sentimental reasons, but the watch is genuine because it has an HEV fitted.

Some people might fall for this and think they have a genuine Comex bargain and others might be prepared to pay the $45000 asking price on a gamble.

I’m no expert but that case looks very odd. It’s sharp in areas you wouldn’t necessarily expect but appears worn in others. I’m not saying it is as I am clearly no expert but it makes you wonder about how that case and hev setup came into existence.

I may be completely wrong, just for the age of the watch and it seems odd.

I don’t understand why anyone, regardless of how much money you have would be foolish enough to spend this kind of money on eBay, for anything, let alone a vintage timepiece.
