They bought the Paul Newman too some years back for crazy money. I don't think replicating old watches it is their objective.

Blimey....strong money indeed - Rolex no shareholders so awash with funds, and it's probably a tax offset !!
In general auctions are mental though and somewhat for the lazy (who can't be bothered to learn/research), the gullible, and the self-regarding I have found. Fool and his money ... I've been to many, and seen fellas get tanked up on 'free' champagne, and bid against other peacocks in an alcohol fugged frenzy. That's how a fella I know ended up paying about a half over its real value for a 60s 250 California - and being upside down on the deal for a decade ! Having said that, 6541 my favourite professional Rolex though.....as I periodically bang on about on VRF .

That's a spectacular watch. The price is mind-boggling of course, but makes for an interesting topic of conversation. Certainly the result was greatly skewed by Rolex's involvement.
I'm intrigued by the US bidder and their motivation; we will never know, of course. I tend to think that most people winning these one-off mega-priced examples are speculators, but paying $2.5M for this might not have been a very good investment.

Dan, I actually don't think that's true. From what I've read/heard they tend to be people with a lot of money (emphasis on a lot) who want to own something that's unique/best that money can buy.

The IG link is dead, can you repost? PS - Is it where Perezcope claims this watch has issues??

I personally share Perezscope's opinion on this example, but hey,
it doesn't matter what I -or people- think: in the end 2 people were players at that price, and one won.

In some cases, I'm sure that's true, but it seems to me that we often see these high priced examples go back to auction a year or two later.

I share Perezcope's opinion on this Milgauss as well. I think they got the whole kit and doctored up the watch. But I am just a schmoe in the swamps staring from the sideline.

Hope the Milgauss 1019 heads in the same direction. I think I have one of those hanging around somewhere...

Yup. There was also a 6265 full set that sold for more than $250,000 .... before fees! Amazing condition, close to NOS, and an R-serial, so the end of the line for acrylic Daytonas. Still, that's more than a quarter-mil, folks, for a 6265! Incredible.

But we might see the jump I've been predicting on 37.5mm Daytonas....now to a minimum (loose) of £65,000/$80,000 anytime soon !

Great story. I think it is the same one I read on Robb Report. Reading some of the other comments, I can see Rolex purchasing it possibly. |

I’m curious also. Did he comment on the RPR watch from the IG post, or the one sold in auction this week?

And to think Richard Petty’s wife thought his Milgauss was ugly, so he returned it and bought another Rolex

Nice watch but also an extraordinarily large amount of money.
