Japan watch shop robbery

Shocking robbery at one of my favorite vintage watch shops in Japan yesterday - Sweet Road in Kawasaki. Luckily they caught one of these despicable theives as he tried to escape.

This is one of Japan's best hidden gems for vintage watches. Give them some love. https://www.sweetroad.com/

"Police say the incident took place at around 1 p.m. on Sunday in a busy area near Kawasaki Station.

The robbers reportedly entered the shop, threatened staff, and fled after shattering showcases with crowbars.

A man believed to be one of the pair was caught by the shop manager and other people on a street about 100 meters away."

Sorry about that I didn’t know, my comment seems a bit tacky in retrospect.

What's going on with the vintage watch thefts in Japan? A few weeks ago they hit Quark in Ginza (passersby thought it was a film set), and now Sweet Road?!?

A populace with a shrinking middle class that is being continually squeezed in close proximity to extremely vulnerable targets with literally millions of dollars in watches sitting like ripe fruit on the vine. IDK, what could go wrong.

Honestly, I'm surprised it took this long for this to start happening.

They caught the perpetrators of both robberies, thankfully. Young amateur thieves, probably employed by the underworld.

I expect it will herald an era of appointment-only viewings everywhere in Japan, though. You won't be able to just turn up and look at nice watches any more.

Appointment-only will probably spread to other major markets like Hong Kong, the UK, etc., if it hasn't already.

A real shame.

Some stores already allow you to see the watches only if you make an appointment when you come to the store.

Similar robberies are occurring frequently not only at vintage watches but also at expensive trading card stores such as Pokémon cards and at brand-name reuse stores.
