Couldn't care less if they put out a press release announcing it as an anniversary edition or prestigious edition. It's just like the Platona, an enthusiasts way to know which is which. The Rainbow Daytona is also an anniversary edition, as are this year's Daytona releases. They just don't announce it as such often. I'm not going to write out 2023 re-issue Cermit Starbucks with light green bezel, I'll just call it the 70th anniversary sub and people in the know, know.

Lol. People know which watch the Platona is because they aren’t idiots.

You own a Starbucks. Flooding the forums with the talk of a “70th anniversary Sub” doesn’t change that.

Of course you can call your watch what you want. You can call it the “Paul Newman watch,” the “Rainbow Sub” or “Terrence.” But it’s just going to make you seem like you don’t know what you’re talking about. Which you clearly do not.

Terrence.

That's good.

Personally I'm going for Nigel but I wouldn't expect anyone else to.

Not saying it would be the Daytona color scheme, but Rolex has shown that not all anniversary year releases include green. Sub and GMT added it for the 50th, but Daytona got a different treatment.

It's definitely called the Terence. Terrance makes no sense at all. Rolex doesn't need a press release for everyone to know it's really the Terence and not just a Terrance with a new bezel.

Just from Rolex's standpoint, why would they release a "secret" anniversary edition and not tell anyone? The whole point is to hype it up and sell as many as they can, just like the Daytona 100.

Rolex doesn't like announcing limited editions and anniversary editions. They just release stuff pretty much. It's an Omega schtick and seems a little low brow. That's my interpretation of Rolex's strategy.

Yep, I'm talking about current Rolex strategy not historical. I understand in the past it was more of a thing. But if you look at Omega they release special limited editions and anniversary editions every week. Rolex might have one every few years. They celebrate special occasions, often they don't announce it in press releases. This is the way.

They put out a press release about an anniversary watch release literally 6 weeks ago.

It does happen but not super often. I think that you guys are getting hung up on is an official, "Anniversary Edition" model with press release and engraved case back and papers. My version of anniversary edition is when they make any new release to commemorate an anniversary. We just have different definitions of anniversary model. From what I've seen Rolex will do something special for every 10 years or so with 25, 50, 75 being extra special commemorative years. The 70th anniversary Sub was simply a bezel color change homage to the 50th anniversary edition; a silent nod to history. But the 75th will almost certainly be some fancy shmancy platinum Sub unique dial type of thing with a press release like you're wanting to see.

Another hint of a silent anniversary model is the color green. They did it for the GMT, DD and Sub. It's like their enthusiast nod to the past.

Most folks wouldn't know the difference because there's no official "anniversary" documentation. But that's what it is.

Someone could tell me they have a 60th anniversary DD and I'd know what they have. Either an Everose or white gold DD with an olive dial. Some collectors do seek out these anniversary celebration models though. People see them as a little extra special. If they had released the same watch a couple years before or after it probably wouldn't be as collectible. That's just how collectors think. Collectors are always looking for, something, that makes it stand out. Whether it's a special anniversary dial/bezel, a limited run on a certain part like a bezel with a different font, or the 1st of anything like the 1st titanium Rolex.

Personally it doesn't matter to me at all. I'm not really a collector in the traditional sense. I just buy what I like. I tend to like variety and color. I'm hoping to have 1 Rolex from each of the major style collections, Dive, Air, Travel, Classic etc.

Thankfully I don't like the Daytona so far! As soon as they go back to high beat rate and 1/10th second chrono I'm on the waitlist from hell though!

Really? A thread with 70th in the title, your dozens of posts about it and adding 70th anniversary sub to your signature indicate otherwise.

When Rolex released the 50th anniversary Sea Dweller 43 they actually said it's the 50th anniversary of the Sea Dweller and there were memorabilia and plaques with 50th anniversary logos. This didn't happen with the 70th Sub, or Day Date or others since then. There is no 70th Sub only Mk2

And they actually issued a new reference.

Just sayin'

As for when Rolex will release a unique reference number anniversary edition? I'd say look for the 10 and 25 year marks for each model line.

I'm currently in the rabbit hole of shopping for Rootbeers, over a dozen variations with the same reference number. The rabbit hole goes deep for collectors. A lot deeper than reference numbers!

The speculation for the 70th anniversary was that they'd bring the hulk back, or a two tone hulk. Turned out to be a lighter shade of green on the bezel. Maybe for 75th the hulk will return or the two tone hulk! I think a TT hulk would look awesome.

Ooof, we will have to agree to disagree on a TT Hulk. That sounds absolutely hideous to me. Garish.
