3700 vs 5711 diameter: literature is not clear
I keep reading unclear or outright contradictory information.
For example when I read this: The 5711 looked mostly the same as the original Nautilus from 1976, with some tweaks. Most notably, it was larger, measuring 40mm across the dial (43mm if you include the "ears") and 8.3mm thick (compared to the 3700's specs of 42mm by 7.6mm). I understand that for 5711 it’s 40mm without the ears (but including bezel width) from 10 to 4 o’clock and 43mm from 9 to 3 o’clock But for 3700, do they mean it’s 42mm for both with and without ears? Or 42mm with the ears ony, but then what is it without? If someone has a definitive answer… |

I have the 3700 and 5712 and they are the exact same dimension. The trick is the 3700 hands and markers are thinner, you have the old smaller Patek Philippe logo and Genève stamp giving a lot of real-estate/space on the dial and hence giving the feeling that is is a larger watch. It is elegant sports watch truly as it was meant to be in 1976. The 5712 (and 5711) both have thicker/sportier hands and markers as well as the newer Patek Philippe logo and Geneve (without the hasmark) which shows less realestate/space on the dial than the 3700 hence appearing smaller. The other thing that makes a big difference is that the 3700 is really thinner than the 5711 and 5712, so the way it sits on the wrist so low does also add to the visual effect that it is larger. just like with dress watches, they could be 34 or 36 but because they are so thin and sit very low do appear a lot larger than the actual case size. Here is a photo of both of my watches Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
