WG VS Platinum DD40

Hi All
Wondering if anyone has “upgraded” from a WG presidential to Platinum?
Is the platinum significantly heavier?
I am planning to trade my WG rhodium dial DD40 in for the new fluted bezel ice blue dial.
Hoping I won’t regret letting the WG gold go.
Would love to hear from people that have both.
Pics of your platinum Ice blues would be appreciated also.

My cousin has a dd40 smooth bezel. It is extremely heavy and it’s hard to get the perfect fit as there is no micro adjustment. He had to buy 2 1.25 links to fit properly. Being platinum the link cost was absurd. If you don’t get the perfect if the watch moves all over the place due to weight.

If I were to get dd40 it would be a wg purely based on weight. I also like the warm tone of Rolex wg.

Does anybody have the weights of both? Also, does anybody have the purity of the platinum? I know they use 18 karat gold. Pure gold pure platinum, platinum is still heavier. That’s even more so if the platinum is pure, but the gold is not.

I am pretty sure it’s 95 percent platinum they refer to it as 950 which is why it is so much heavier as 18 k gold is only 75 percent gold. The densities of platinum and gold are actually minimally different ( 21.45 g/cm^3 for Pt and 19.3 g/cm^3 for Gold) but since the platinum used is more pure the alloys 950 vs 18 k have a larger disparity in density and this why platinum watch is so much heavier compared to gold counterpart.

Doesn’t get much better than the ice blue dial. The weight won’t really be noticeable once you’re used to it. At least that’s been my experience. The PT is much brighter than the WG which is a plus IMO.

I started my journey with a WG DD 36 and now have a PT DD40. There is NO comparison. Platinum is brighter, heavier and more enjoyable to wear. I love the platinum and think it’s worth it. WG is more grey in tone and softer if that makes any sense. It def is lighter than PT but you get used to the weight very quickly. In fact that the weight gets to the point where it’s hard to wear anything else.

I have owned multiple Platinum DD II's and always like them but in the end moved them along. Not because of the fit, wear or look but because I got bored and they have such good value I trade for something else. Same with WG. I can see circling back around at some point but right now for PM I own a YG DD II and a YG Submariner LB.

I’m thinking platinum might be the forever piece in this journey.

A small point but the term presidential is not really Rolex jargon. The watch is the DayDate and the bracelet is the "President" bracelet. It always gets me when SAs at ADs use the term presidential as a name for the watch. It suggests they really do not know their product.

Found a little background. Came from Bob's watches, not the Rolex website, but details the history.

"It is also possible that the ‘President’ name is actually a mistake. Some say that the original ‘President’ nickname was given by Rolex to the bracelet on the Rolex Day-Date, not the entire timepiece. "The President" bracelet appeared around 1966. An add from the time refers to the name "President,” but only when referring to the bracelet designed by Rolex for the Day-Date, not the entire watch. The name didn’t really appear until the mid-sixties. This was around the same the time U.S. President Lyndon Johnson began wearing his trademark yellow gold Rolex.

The name ‘President’ soon came to refer to the entire Day-Date watch. Rolex, whatever their original intent, ran with it. In 1984, a popular add campaign featured "The Rolex President Day-Date Chronometer. Available in 18kt. gold, with matching bracelet." This is the first time Rolex directly referred to their timepiece as the “President.” Thus, whether they initially started it or not, Rolex came to adopt the moniker. They didn’t keep it for long, and soon resorted back to simply calling it the ‘Day-Date.” However, the famous nickname stuck, and many still refer to ‘The Rolex President’ when discussing it."

This was my first Rolex purchased back in the early 90's happily I still own it. Take a peak at the name Rolex placed on the box.

My point was not the term President which is a noun which Rolex uses, but the word Presidential which may be an adjective and a word Rolex does not use.

I think a lot of SAs at ADs have it tough. The ones I know have to sell various watch brands and other jewelry too.

No excuse for bad customer service, but most of the ones I interact with are friendly and try hard.

Back to the original thread. I'm interested next time to compare the weight of gold vs platinum. I'm thinking if I tried really hard I could get used to the weight of platinum LOL - that would be a great problem to have one day. But unfortunately not able to play in that space.... yet.
