GMT Master II vs Submariner Date vs Deepsea

I have been contemplating adding my first Rolex to my collection for some time now, and I am pretty sure that I want the GMT Master II 126710BLNR on Oyster, but I also like the Jubilee, but I feel it will be a lot less durable and over time is likely to stretch.

What are people's experiences of this?
Also is the clasp wider on the Jubilee? It looks like it might be, and the bracelet has less of a taper than the Oyster...
The draw of the GMT is the GMT function and the blue/black bezel.

The Submariner is nice, also, and it has the added benefit of being more adjustable with the Glidelock clasp.

I also really like the Deepsea D-Blue (James Cameron), but this looks like a seriously chunky watch, and the date window looks odd without the cyclops lens above it.

I can't speak to the bracelet's long term durability but it is not flimsy and feels just as solid after a couple of years. The clasps are the same for the Oyster and Jubilee bracelets on the GMT Master II. The tapers are identical. The Oyster is not remotely uncomfortable but the Jubilee is even better. I have both bracelets but since putting it on Jubilee I haven't wanted to go back.

If the GMT is what calls you initially I would go that direction.

Also. I don’t own a jubilee bracelet however they reportedly tend to show less scrapes and scratches as there is less flat surface area making contact with objects overall. Just as durable and hides scratches better so really just put it down to aesthetic preference.

Get the watch that most matches your actual lifestyle, unless you are just a fashionista, then get whichever one you see first.

GMT all day long.

I enjoy the movement (jumping hour hand) and complication of this GMT over a diver.

I personally feel the BLNR is the best of the modern ones too.

Gmt

GMT and Sub appear to have similar dimensions, but GMT is slightly thinner (thinner caseback) and as a result wears better.

Historically sub seems to be the watch to get first, but in my opinion GMT is the superior watch.

I actually consider the GMT to be the best watch in the current Rolex collection.

Oyster vs. Jubilee is just a matter of preference.

If part of a collection BLRO on jubilee is a fun watch to have, if only watch I would probably go with BLNR on oyster.

I tried on a DeepSea once. That was enough to not want to own it. Just too chunky.

Got the Sub first and love it. Then the BLRO which is fantastic and the color is so iconic. But for me feels kind of light. For me, the best wrist feel for me is the D-blue out of the three. The glide lock adjustment is so perfect. But if one of them just calls out to you - then that is the one to get [first ;)]

I have the GMT Master II in jubilee and the Sub Date.
Both wear comfortably on my tiny 6.25” wrist.

Regarding adjustability on both the clasps (GMT jubilee with easylink & Sub oyster with glidelock), I have not use either since both bracelets were sized to my wrist. So you will need to assess how important is this feature to you.

You can’t go wrong with either the GMT Master II or the Sub Date. Sorry I have no experience with the Deepsea as it’s too chunky to me.

Go with the 1 that speaks to you (either in terms of features, design, history etc).

All the best to your watch shopping journey!

The GMT has a flatter caseback and with the jubilee bracelet, it wears more comfortably than the other two, (for me).

The jubilee also show less signs of wear than the brushed oyster IMO.

You can’t go wrong buying either the GMT or Submariner. The DSSD is an awesome watch but more of a rotation piece IMO.

Not sure what your wrist size is…mine’s about 8 in. Here’s my BLNR on jubilee (with an extra link and the easy link open) and my 126660 James Cameron. Love them both in their own way, but would pick the BLNR if I could only have one I think.

Tough choice. I have both the Sub and the GMT BLNR on jubilee. Fortunately, I don’t have to choose between the two.

If you are going to have only one and a batman GMT, I think it looks better with the Oyster.

If you plan to eventually have the sub and GMT, then I would get the Jubliee on GMT as you can only get the sub in oyster.

I have both modern Sub and GMT II. I go back and forth on this because I love the Sub with glidelock clasp but also travel frequently so I need the hr hand feature.
There is zero difference in “comfort” lol between these watches, they’ve both unobtrusive and correctly balanced. The DSSD may be entirely different. I owned a PO once and that was probably similar to DSSD in wearability meaning, top heavy. I feel much less conspicuous walking around London UK with a Sub on my wrist.

…your issue might be availability for whatever reference you choose, as this is your first Rolex.

I have the Rootbeer and the Deepsea JC. Love them both and both are easy to wear. But when I wear the Rootbeer after the Deepsea JC, the Rootbeer feels somehow very small ))

Hi, I have all three and here's my opinion on them.

Sub - The perfect everyday Rolex. Great comfort, adjustability and for me, could be a one and done watch.

GMT Master II - Mine is on the jubilee, which I'd say is slightly more comfortable than the oyster. It's sized correctly so generally has the easy link closed and I'll only open it in during hot weather. Definitely the flashiest of the three, as the bracelet does catch and reflect light well. For me, this would be part of a collection as it doesn't suit my lifestyle 100% of the time.

JC Deepsea - What a watch!. Mine is very comfortable to wear. It's quite surprising really how such a thick watch can fit so well. You certainly feel the heft though. Superb bracelet. A weekend watch for a bit of fun and variety I'd say.

Overall, I'd say the GMT is slightly more comfortable than the beefier sub, but not a lot in it.
I would't concern yourself with any modern bracelet stretch issues. They are so well made nowadays. Just make sure they are fitted correctly and keep them clean and you'll be good for decades.
I personally think the JC Deepsea dial is the most handsome offering in the whole Rolex range. If they could add that to the sub, that would be my perfect watch!.

Try before you buy if you can and good luck with your first purchase.

what about the sea dweller ? has a super cool look over the sub, but very wearable for many wrist sizes. The Deepsea is great but only for the larger wrists out there.

How big is your wrist? Maybe take some pics and post them so we can see proportions and advise you better.

Batman is my dream watch so no going wrong there, it’s my fave GMT. I have that as my #1 preferred choice with several ADs and the Sub Date as my second. Was lucky to get an SD43 (my third option) first! Fits well on my 8” wrist but not as classy as the other two I really want.

Yes and for BLNR more likely the Oyster would come in first, I prefer an Oyster with a Ceramic bezel but the Jubilee is very comfy. I probably like the look of the JC the most but it is thick and top heavy on me, I have Breitlings and APs that are similar size but are more balanced on my wrist.

I would go with the Submariner as a first. An icon and the ultimate Rolex tool watch. I prefer the No Date, ND, version for the balance of the dial. The bracelet is outstanding and the Glide Lock Clasp makes getting the right fit perfect every time. Acquiring the watch is another story. The Submariner is doable from an AD with limited to no history. The BLNR, not so much. If you are going to the secondary market you will see a 4-7K difference between the two. I own the 124060, BLNR and the BLRO and the Submariner get 3x the wear of the others combined. Get all the information. Go try the watches on and find your best deal. That is the formula. Good luck.

Sounds like the GMT is the one for you. Add both bracelets for to mix it up.

Go try some on.

The new jubilees have solid center links, so wont stretch like the old hollow ones.

The oyster has the polished center links which will scratch up. As does the jubilee, but they are smaller links, so not quite as visible when scratched up, imo.

The oyster bracelet on the 126710 has PCL’s which I do not particularly care for. The Jubilee band option does as well but scratches are not as noticeable and the jubilee is superior in comfort.

Comparing the three models you mention, I happen to have all three, and will say that concerning the bands, the DSSD JC band is my favorite. The ability to manage the sizing with the gridlock clasp without taking the watch off like the Sub Date and limited adjustment on the GMT is the game changer for me as far as my preference.

Daily use and practicality, the GMT or Sub Date may be logical choice as the case height, being able to read the date at a glance (if that is essential to you) is essential to me as I look at it multiple times in a day. The case height is a little cumbersome with the DSSD with the cuff on your LS shirts and in my case I hit that thing on gurneys, oxygen tanks and everything you can imagine at work. With that said, the wear of this watch is now a weekend only wearer.

GMT and Sub, fit underneath shirt cuffs nicely and do not inadvertently hit everything that comes in its path (I may just be a klutz).

As far as the width of the clasp of the jubilee vs. the Oyster on the GMT, they are exactly the same as pictured (the two on the left) and glidelock clasps are a little different as the Sub (second from the right) is slightly narrower than the DSSD (on the far right)

Then it comes down to your points, do you use the GMT bezel function more than the glidelock? Personally I use the glidelock more than the GMT bezel. The GMT does have a micro adjustment that does accommodate for wrist swelling in the summer.

One attribute that stands out the most when you look at the three you mention is that the DSSD JC dial is perhaps the most stunning dial they make if you like color variation, the gradient is thumbs up in the sun, not to mention the magnifying effect the crystal thickness projects from all angles (with the exception of looking straight down). Once you see the crystal shape and thickness you may see why Rolex did not place date magnification on a curved or doomed crystal.

In my humble opinion, if you buy one….. you might end up getting one of the others if not all three in the end. So with that said, with the current selection to choose from. The date sub may be where you would get the most out of one Rolex. Not to mention it can go with anything you wear, from Tux to trunks.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Rob
