New Daytona…
Hi everyone,
I’m new here and this is my first post. I have a question - the new MOP Daytona’s with diamond bezels - doesn’t have a tachymetric scale. Therefore how is the user meant to use it to measure average speeds, which the watch is designed for ? I appreciate the diamond bezels are nothing short of incredible. But, this has only just occurred to me. Surely with a diamond bezel the so called sports watch is rendered no more of a performance watch than an OP ? What do the dials do ? Time seconds and minutes….!? I may have missed the point here completely - so please correct me if I have, but my understanding was a Daytona timed speed. Therefore the tachymetric scale was needed for this ? Thanks |

Bejeweled precious metal watches are more jewelry than anything. The same can be said for the GMT’s and Submariners.

The gems on the older Daytonas were used to measure how quickly the price you paid depreciated.
Now the new gem set Daytonas are used to time how fast it takes you to flip them for a profit. |

Hi Brian, thanks for replying.
Ok I guess that makes sense with the loss of the bezel on the other models aswell.. It hadn’t occurred to me until seeing the diamond dial that the watch actually fully lost that function because of it. Thank you for the welcome it’s fascinating reading everyone’s comments and input ! |

LOL - brilliant ! It hadn’t occurred to me before now that by having the gem set dial you lose the function of the watch itself…

Thank you Brian… as I say more an observation but does seem a shame to have lost this function for jewellery’s sake. When is a Daytona not a Daytona I guess !!

99% of Rolex's haven't been used for their 'functional' aspects in decades...

Have to agree Brian and no longer a proper Daytona but now by name only, same for the rest of the sports line up that takes the functions from what they were designed for for the sake of bling precious stones.

Hi flyboy - thanks for reply. Sure can appreciate that and I done take anything away from it being a work of art. It just seems a shame to lose that function completely to have the gem set dials.. something I hadn’t really considered before..

Hi Peter, thanks for replying.. it was more just an observation and not something I’d considered before.
Still, it’s an incredible piece just not sure the diamond bezel and MOP couldn’t have been put on an OP and been half the price. But what do I know !! |

Although things like diamonds are quite expensive and Rolex only uses the best quality and they are quite small, and when bought in bulk the prices drop quite a bit.But it's mainly down to the labour and time cost for the stone setter to set stones perfect every time that's the big expense.

True, you can't measure the traditional, "Units per hour," on this version of the Daytona. But really, the people who buy this piece will be buying it for sheer love of the model, so they probably won't miss that functionality.
