Which one?
My dear friend is looking to purchase a watch for his son in law. He's leaning towards a Tag Heuer. He has a budget of $3000 CAD, which lands him on quartz options. He's considering the Solar Quartz Aquaracer 200 ref. WBP1113.BA0000. I am recommending he consider the Longines Legend Diver for around the same price. What would you recommend between the two and why? Also, what do you generally recommend, a Tag or Longines? Thanks

Unless the recipient is a WIS, I’d go TAG here.

I just want to say first that I always appreciate your posts on rolexforums.
Depending on the son-in-law, the right choice might not be the Longines, even if it's a nicer watch. TAG is likely a better recognized name for the general son-in-law demographic and a solar quartz is more user friendly for people who don't know nothin' 'bout no watches. But the Longines is far better if the son-in-law has any sign of potentially becoming one of us. |

Depends does he favor watches on straps on bracelets?
I was gifted a RG IWC Port Chrono on a strap from my wife 13 years ago. I think Ive worn it 13 times since I've gotten it. I just don't think Im a strap guy, I always seem to be right in between two holes no matter which brand. I REALLY want a Patek and could make that happen with selling a few watches I have no attachment to but I just know I wont like straps. I could go with the 5270R but I think it may be too flashy to wear it casually yet I wear my YG DD40 quite often so I don't know....

I prefer the updated longines legend diver. I was debating the no date when they first came out but the hands looked a bit rough, which was the case for the dolce vita I had in college. The new one has small little changes which don't seem like much but cleans it up for me. Kinda hoping they will do them in brighter colors like orange or yellow, id def get one. I like my ultrachron but the mix of applied markers with printed looks a bit odd to me.

Longines Legend Diver is for me a better option. Better looking dial than Tag

Between those two, the Longines (assuming the long lug-to-lug length fits the wrist).
I'd also consider a Doxa or Seiko. |

The Longines is lovely, but once you see those hands... I'd also look at Seiko as they make some killer divers and field watches at very competitive prices.
For divers, there's the SPB453 based on the original 62MAS or the SPB317 based on the Willard - the watch Martin Sheen wore in Apocalypse now. There's also the option of the Alpinist SPB151/155. Iconic, timeless watches all, and my god can the Prospex line take a beating... |

The Aquaracer is nice but I prefer automatic. I have 4 of them from 4 generations.

The applied hour markers on the Tag are very nice, I find that they elevate a watch. However at first glance the gradient dial catches my eye more and it reminds me of the JLC polaris mariner date, which is a watch I really like., so I am leaning toward the Longines.
Also I have found that the crowns at 2 and 4 are very comfortable. |

The Longines is a much cooler looking watch. Not to mention it's a superior brand in many respects. Underrated for sure in todays' market, though. Wish we could just go back to "Heuer" :(

Does it have to be a new watch? If the option would be to go pre owned, you get a lot of Tudor Black Bay and Black Bay 58 options for not that much more.

I’d say Longines is much better value as a collector. Tag has big brand recognition amongst the general public but is horrible value for non collectors. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
